National park closure, anyone here been inconvenienced?
I can only imagine how frustrating/infuriating it must be if one had reservations at a National Park or other attraction and was either told to get out or not allowed in due to the govt shutdown. Have any of our members experienced anything related to this?

We had reservations at a local COE campground this weekend which in itself isn't that big a deal, there are other campgrounds in the area. We had also planned to do some fishing, best spot is below the dam, but both sides are COE recreation areas which are also closed, so not to happy

Have a friend hosting a park in California that says he may be coming home, but it was getting close to closing time anyway because he's at a high elevation.

Just for the sake of argument it could quite possibly be illegal to demand you vacate a campsite for which the government has already been paid for its use. Short of a natural disaster such as a flood, earthquake or fire there should be no requirement for you to leave your rented site until the time that has been paid for has expired.
Just food for thought.
In the scope of the disaster our congress has flung upon us this is almost insignificant. Annoying none-the-less.
Yes, I too, have a paid-for reservation at a COE park for Monday 10/7 that is not likely to be honored.

I think you may be right. Yosemite and Sequoia NP are refusing arrivals and issuing refunds, but if you are already in the park you can stay through your reservation. At least that is what our local news is reporting, I live very close to both parks.

Everyone here was given until 8pm tonight to vacate the campgrounds, refunds were given for the "unused" portion.

Just curious, are they giving an actual cash on the barrel head money refund or just a verbal promise to do so?

That I don't know, we are supposed to have ours put back on our CC, not sure how they are handling it at the campground.

amabee, that's about what I thought. With all of the problems they are going to encounter getting things going again the refunds may take some time.

So who is on duty to throw you out of the park if you are already paid up and checked in? Just curious, someone must still be working.

From the Fresno Bee Newspaper
Yosemite--About 600 park employees were furloughed Tuesday. About 150 employees remain on duty, Gediman said, including law enforcement, facilities maintenance -- such as electricity and sewer -- and emergency medical service.
Some businesses owned by the park's concessionaire, Delaware North, will remain open for limited periods. Examples are the Yosemite Village Store and Curry Village Gift & Grocery, Gediman said.

I have a close friend that is a senior manager with the COE. When Sequestration was upon us last year he received a letter from "higher ups" to make cuts within his area as "painful and visible to the public as possible". He told his boss he could make his necessary cuts and be completely transparent to the public, but was ordered not to do it that way.
I'm not being political here, just stating fact.

I was glad to see that the WWII vets stormed the gates of the national mall and got in to see the WWII memorial! Can`t stop those guys, my dad was a WWII vet.

Just like the war memorials in Washington DC. They can pay park employees to erect barricades and keep the owners out but not pay someone to stand there and let the owners in. Here's what should really happen during a govt. "shutdown"...we the people should put a hold on Congress's direct deposit. Sorry, couldn't keep my mouth shut.

we have reservations starting next Wednesday in Yellowstone. not inconvenienced yet and have not given up hope but it sure looks like they are going to drag it out and we wont be going. we are looking into alternatives but most involve forest circus or national parks and most other places are closed already. I would consider our situation fortunate though, at least we did not drive a few thousand miles to come up to an entrance to a park to find it closed. in west Yellowstone the chamber is listing alternative things to do for those people that came to see the park and are locked out.

My father was also a WWII vet (WWII and Korea), total of 13 years in the Navy.
I registered to be an escort for these Honor Flights (you pay your own way), but have never been called.
You can bet I would have moved the barracades for these guys to see their memorial.
Best regards,
Doug

See, that's what I was wondering also. Most of the campgrounds in NPs are staffed by volunteers. I don't understand why a camper would have to get out. The government is us, not some nebulus entity out there. Afterall, THEY ARE OUR PARKS!

Do a search for CONTACTING SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES I called my senator and representatives office in Idaho and asked the secretary to please send them a message. " Git your s h 1 t together and do what we sent you to Washington to do. In both cases the nice lady that answered the phone assured me they would get the message.

In mid October, we are supposed to be stopping in Gettysburg for a few days, on our way to Florida. We may have to rethink that part of the itinerary. It is really too bad. The boys have been planning this trip around the 150th Anniversary events.

We have reservations in a local NF for Tuesday and Wednesday. We did get a call from the campground this past Tuesday saying that since they're a concessionaire they will be open. Of course, on Wednesday the stories started flying that concessionaires are being told to close all their campgrounds. I'll try calling on Monday and again on Tuesday before driving up there.
