My old computers hard drive decided it did not like life any longer.. when I looked at the cost of a new hard drive and the associated work vs a new computer.. I got the new computer... BUT somehow lost all my word doc.'s including financial...... back to Geek Squad I go I guess....

I understand, I've list a few hard drives. I now backup my computer about once a month, onto an external hard drive I keep locked up at work. If my computer is lost, stolen, heaven forbid, a house fire, or even a tornado, I have not lost all my data.

Another option to consider is a cloud-based service such as Mozy or Carbonite. Just google "cloud backup" for more info. While I run daily backups against my Mac to a local USB disk I use Mozy as my off-site backup. With Mozy I back up just targeted data such as documents, encrypted images with financial data, email and of course the tons and tons of photos that we all have. It's an automatic and easy way to protect your data by getting a copy someplace other than the primary computer as well as out of the house.

Good luck on the recovery effort!

Are they not on the old machine anymore? Diid you do more than just unplug the old and boot up the new? Without a harddrive failure things don't just disappear.
Did you move your old profile, with associated files, over to the new machine?

I backed up every week but it wont take the back up on a new OS.. 7.1>10.. I can still get into my old machine... just not seen any of the controls I am used to on 10 so for now it is all guess and by golly...
Yeah I know I should not have a computer but all my friends live in mine....

Don't know what specific type of harddrive you have but there would be one of these that would work.
Amazon.com: Mediasonic ProBox K32-SU3 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Enclosure - USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, Optimized for UASP & SATA 3 6.0Gbps hard drive transfer rate: Computers & Accessories
You then just plug it into the usb on your new machine and go get your files. Once you have them, and if the old harddrive is any good, you could clean it off and use it for storage/backups.

Geek Squad should be able to do this I just did a 7 - 10 for the wife. I have a device (Egghead electronics) that takes her old drive and makes it a second drive (USB external) on the new. Boot in Win10, connect, open old HD and copy wanted items, simple for geek.

They are the ones that set this up in the first place.. and did a poor job in my estimation...

Yep they did a bad job. The device I got was like Cosmik Debris link shows, different brand I think. Great "tool" working on the infernal machines.
