Overheard at a dealership

Before finally buying our Jayco we walked through a lot of dealerships and overheard a lot of couples discussing their purchase. I lost count how many times I heard the following sentence stem

"We could easily afford this one if we . . ."

We finished ours with if we ate dinner at home a few times a week.

How did you finish yours?

And we haven't really started eating more at home [emoji3]

"We could easily afford this one if we . . ." Get low financing. The dealer offered us 4.99%. We went outside and ended up with less than 2.5%. So that's what sealed the deal for us. That gives a little extra a month with the same term.

If we go home and prove out our plan over at least a year before we sign.

... put a little less in savings.

That's what we said when we bought our current TT. We don't generally stretch our budget a lot when we make large purchases, and that's by design. And we tend to shop the lowest interest rate we can get when we finance, and pay off early.

Now, when we step into the DPs at RV shows? We say things like "we need to play the lotto", or "we could do this if we sold our house and most of our 'stuff' and lived in it". In reality (where we live) it's unlikely we will ever be able to afford something like that. But everybody's gotta dream a little!

If you sold that extra car of yours this TT won't cost us a penny and we should have money to spare! So I did and never looked back.

If.... We didn't have an "if" and paid cash. We've been debt free for about 30 years and plan to stay that way. I bought a '11 F-150 on credit because I could get another $1,000- off the price. I had to keep the loan for 90 days to keep from having an early-payment penalty... so I paid it off on day 91. I paid about $100- in interest so I had a net gain of about $900- off the price of the pickup...

Whether paying cash or financing I've always had an if. I passed on the '13 F150 Raptor to pay cash. If I didn't have to tow, I would have gone ahead and bought another 4x4.

If ...

If I forgo that month trip to Europe via Business Class.. So I did, and I DID ! 'Course then again I only bought (cash) the little guy in my Signature below. What with the situation in Europe these days, probably a prudent decision. The bambis/elk I pursue (with my Jayco) don't use IED's or shoot back!

.... if we got it for free.

Which we sort of did. A year ago my wife decided to "invest" in a rental house that was for sale on a foreclosure auction. She bought it, we put a very little into it to fix it up - about $5000. After a year she decided that she wasn't the landlady type. Sold the house for a $40,000 profit. Paid for the TT and half of the TV to pull it.

Perfect deal, considering we are on a fixed income, SS and investments.
