Pearl Harbor at 70

70 Years ago today, almost to the minute as I type this (8:00 AM Hawaiian) a time of innocence and peace ended for the US and the world would never be the same again..............

A very solemn and symbolic image, the mighty guns of the USS Missouri, where the war against Japan officially ended with the signing of the surrender on her decks in 1945, overlook and guard the USS Arizona Memorial where the war began at Pearl Harbor. Over 1000 sailors are still entombed in the Arizona`s hull and oil still seeps out to the surface to this day from her oil tanks which had been filled with 1.5 million gallons of oil for an upcoming deployment that would never come. Many of the servicemen that died at Pearl never knew who attacked them or why, as they were below decks when the ships sank.

Note the oil streaks in the water

Many years back on my way to Vietnam, I got to visit the Arizona memorial. All I can is, it was very moving. God bless the USA and thank you to all our vets who made the sacrifice to protect and defend this great county.

My Dad was in the Navy and at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. He was later sent to Australia where he met my mother. They were married 50 years. He passed in 2005. I am very proud of him and miss him dearly.

I just saw on the news tonight that the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association is disbanding. Simply not enough members still alive to keep it going.

God bless all of the servicemen & women and allies from all the wars and conflicts, and especially those that served at Pearl 70 years ago today. Thanks for sharing this, Crabman.
