Price of propane

I filled up a 30 pound tank @ the CG we are at for $40.00

Not having filled up here before, I expected to pay more for the convienience; but, not that much. NOTE: the price increased on 12/01/11 - according to my CG neighbor it was $30 prior to the increase.

Well, I just went into town (6 miles from CG) and filled another 30 pounder for $21.00.

I guess I'll be heading into town for now on...

$3.00/gallon is about what I just paid for a top off of my 150 gallon winter tank.

My 30 pounder took 6 gallons @ $3.50 per (thus the $21 fee). Not sure what math they are now doing here at the CG; but, they should wear a "mask" when taking my money like that! Live and learn...

I fill my tanks at a local U-Haul and they charge about $3.50 a gallon or so. Plus they knock off $1 for returning customers. The nice thing is, they only charge you for the actual number of gallons it takes and not some arbitrary amount based on the number of gallons a specific tank can accommodate. Some other places assume your tanks are completely empty and charge you for a full fill.

Nice convenience fee...lol....I mean I could see paying $5.....maybe $10 tops if it meant I didn't have to drive 20 minutes to where I usually fill...but what you paid was wayyyyy too high.

I fill up at the Pilot/FlyingJ. I can usually go just once or twice a year. I also have 5 20lbs that I use for various things and they all go. I had to quit using the swaps...you talk about rip off.....

A side note to all of this, is that their prices in the CG store are pretty reasonable (e.g. a universal thermocoupler, w/ adapters for the stove, is $6.95)

Buckshot Restaurant here is the cheapest place to fill propane at with a price of $3.22 gal... but even they are up 20% from last season.

In the Parker Az area it is usually $2.95 a gallon. I was in Bouse today and it was $2.70 at the Desert Pueblo campground.

Last years price was $2.59

Many campgrounds overcharge because they can. Find a U-haul or if on the road Flying Js fills propane at reasonable cost and if you join their frequent fueler program, you get 10 cent per gallon discount on propane and 2 cents for gas and 3 cents for diesel (per gal).

I filled my empty 30 pound tank and it was just under $20. I go to a local hardware store. The fill by the pound.

We currently sell propane at .94 cents per pound. The price changes every time we fill the bulk tank and is cheaper in summer. In the winter the is priority to who gets the gas, Residential heating, commercial use and then resale so depending on how cold the winter is will effect the prices. Also if you exchange the 20lp grill size tanks you are probably not getting a full tank. For the convenience of exchanging a tank and the effort to keep the price down the exchange companies only put 15lbs in the 20lb tank. There is also a expiration date on all tanks as well which is 12 years from the date of manufacturing and 5 years if it was recertified. The date of manufacturing will be stamped on the collar as a month/year and the recerts will usually be engraved with the date followed by a letter. Once the tanks expire by US DOT law they cannot be filled, so check the dates on your tanks because if they are empty and you are in a bind, the seller may not be able to fill them.

You are absolutely correct about the expiration dates on tanks. I have been having tanks refilled for nearly 30 years and I have had a grand total of one (1) dealer that I saw that ever checked the date. YMMV

Find out where the locals get their tanks filled and go there. When I get mine filled, they only charge for the amount filled.

I guess it is that time of the year again. I just called my propane supplier and booked my gas for this winter. I booked it at $2.569/gallon so to put it in 30 lb tank jargon, that would be $17.98 to fill a 30 lb tank assuming a 30 lb tank holds 7.0 gallons. I do have an external 150 gallon tank that I hook up to in the winter so I don't fill my 30 lb tanks very often. Usually only 1 a year due to some boondocking. But when the big tank needs filling it hurts. I usually have to fill one big fill and one partial. The tank right now has 65% in it and was last filled in February.

Never before heard of anyplace that charges as if the tank is empty, regardless. Around my area, all the places weigh before and after, and charge for what they put in. 30# is usually around $19 depending on the season.

Check out Flying J, & use the Good Sam Card has been about $2.99 per gallon or less. Also check the LP Gas distributor, such as Amerigas I bought a 30# for $1.99 a gallon this past summer. Campgrounds it is a convienance and when you run out and are cold, you need the LP now! Happy Camping
