I too use the VERIZON MIFI setup here for Internet HOTSPOT.
Always wanted to use my cell phone for backup Internet connections but my older MOTO DROID doesn't support it.
If I ever upgrade to a newer cellphone will most definitely use its tether capability. I too run into batteries going down real quick. Hopefully my upgrade cellphone will have a FATBACK battery capability. I make the big mistake of leaving my Droid on charge all the time. So far I am still able to get new batteries for it...
I am a big user of INTERNET RADIO SCANNER listening to all of my favorite Public Service Radio locations using my Droid when on the road... At Home my internet connection works great doing many Broadcastify.com connections for Radio Scanners...
I hear Santa is bringing me a new battery and a new case for my MOTO Droid haha...
