USA TODAY Front Page.....
The USA TODAY front page headlines; " How state lawmakers PUMP UP PENSIONS in ways you can't", should have created some heated discussions over coffee this morning. This isn't new news to me, but I hope it stirred some added thought for some folks to carry with them into the voting booths.

Bob,
Being self employed I have to make my own pension plan, and its not easy with safe fixed investments (CD,s, savings, US Treasurys, etc) yielding near zero and stock indexes lower then they were 12 years ago. Unfortunately I see no light in the tunnel except the train that`s coming at us! And I can`t cook my books like those in the article or I would only be fooling myself! Oh, well commercial fishermen never retire anyway, they die with their boots on.

Lee,
I hear all-to-well what you are saying.
Unfortunately I just don't believe that enough of our lawmakers truly "feel", or grasp, what most Americans have been through, or are facing "financially" going forward.
Like yourself I to depend on my own financial ability (no pension) to support myself in retirement, and even living extremely conservative I still have that long-term sinking feeling in my gut.

I was watching a financial news channel the other day and the financial guru man being interviewed said the fed is at the "throw the gun point" in our economy. When asked what that meant, he replied well, when you have fired all your bullets and the villain is still coming after you, all you have left is to "throw the gun" at them....................interesting analogy.

No pension- but worked, skimped and saved for retirement. So far after a lot of years it was a great plan.

Pension is doing OK (worked 32 years at the same company to get that). Now that Social Security has kicked in, I'm actually putting money back in the bank instead of taking it out. I also have an annuity that will make up to $4000 a year for this and the next two years (the principle is guaranteed) which I'm just rolling over so it can earn interest. I'm living conservatively now to avoid feeling the pinch as badly when inflation catches up to me.

That's what I did as well, and glad my father started me down that path from an early age.

Our pensions are doing well and both of us get Social Security. Right now we are not old enough for medicare so the health insurance is outrageous. $940 a month.

Yowtch! I'm lucky that my pension includes a fairly decent health plan.
No dental coverage sucks, though. I'm out about $6k on work so far this year.
