Way out in left field

I know this has nothing to do with camping. Are there any microphone experts on the board? My question: What will cause a GOOD/EXPENSIVE microphone to go bad in it's case? Has not been, drooped, shook, hit, banged in any way. Just in it's case on a shelf. Yes, it has a fresh battery.

Any thoughts?

Is this a wireless performance mike?
Since it happened to me recently (I spent an hour taking apart a kids toy, just to find out my first test was bogus) have you checked both batteries to make sure they work?
Have you checked the mike's battery contacts to see if they are corroded?
Have you tried hitting it on your palm a couple of times?

Thanks guys. It baffles me. Just go bad in the case. Next question. Is it cost effective to have them repaired? Or just spent a few hundred to a new one?

You said the microphone has a new battery, so this is an electret microphone (condenser) which requires power. Are you sure the battery is inserted the correct way?
What are you using the microphone in? Recorder, camcorder, transmitter? Is this a wireless handheld microphone or lavalier (clip on lapel)?

Most microphones are not worth repairing. The cost of a new one is generally the same or less than the cost repairing them.

I work as a technician for a company that manufactures professional audio equipment.
I may be able to help you get it repaired or even get a replacement for you.

I use them with a sound system for singing and playing music. I have some that require a battery and some that do not. The Peavey mic's do not require a battery. One of which just stopped working in the case. I don't recall the brand name for the one that requires a battery. May be a Sure. It also stopped working in the case. I have several, and thus I don't take some of them out of the case very often. The two in question have been in the case several years.
