I run the very noisy bag room at a large airport. Shouting "What?" is in my blood.

Abarkl DOES have a job... creating polls for JOF! Thanks for the interesting questions abarkl.

Depending on the person's voice, I either understand them well, or not at all. I couldn't understand what my ex-wife was saying most of the time, but thinking back, that was probably my selective hearing kicking in.

Mostly I respond with "say again?"

Sometimes I just laugh/agree/shrug. Especially if I've asked them to repeat several times and I still can't hear them or don't get it.

My hearing is getting bad, especially when there are certain other frequencies coming in. Mostly I can hear fine, but when the ambient noise is just right, you could land a jet next to my head and the only reason I'd turn is because I felt the breeze!

Please add "ignore and make like you didn't hear them" If it was important enough they will repeat it. If they don't, then carry on with your business.

Not sure that technique would keep my DW happy.

This poll sounds like the introduction to a Miracle Ear™ commercial.

If a tree falls in the woods and I don't hear it, did it fall?

I don't ask them to repeat themselves, I just assume they are mumbling to themselves about the state of the union, canker sores, or that 'affordable' health insurance they ended up with.

My SO couldn't shout her way out of a paper bag. After years of trying the options in this pole, I go the deaf or dumb route

I'm half deaf in one ear, and can't hear out the other. Depending upon the mood i'm in, i'll usually politely ask them to repeat the comment, or i'll just ignore them.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't listening?"

Works quite well. Slightly self-deprecating with a questioning tone.

Usually they'll talk more carefully or louder whey they repeat.

Just listen for your name, then smile and nod when you hear it.
