I guess I am a youngin' ....My first car was a 1980 Chevy Impala with a 267 V8 - what a slow tank! I had to share it with my twin brother so we kept the tank on empty and would put $1 or $2 in it every time we went out. It could "run into" lots of things and still come out without a scratch unlike today....
This is the actual first vehicle I learned to drive a stick shift on -- I loved the double clutch action --

I'm only 62. I was in my late forties, early fifties and divorced before I bought my first new vehicle. I was 19 when we bought the '51 Pymouth.

You never forget your first one. My 49 Ford was almost 10 years old when I got it. Paid for it by bagging groceries at A&P.

Mine was a 1950 Chrysler Windsor Club Coupe. No, I'm not that old. I inherited it from my great aunt when she died. It was 14 years old with 14,000 miles on it.
An earlier post said something about a slow V8? This sucker had a flat head six, weighed 3,900 pounds and had Chrysler's Prestomatic transmission. It basically was a two speed transmission, but had a clutch. The shift was on the column, but you only had reverse and low (where second would normally be) and high (where third would be). The first gear position wasn't there. Normally you would press the clutch, start the engine, put it in the high position and let the clutch out. Yes you could be stopped with the clutch out. When you started up by pressing the gas you would get to a point where you needed to shift. You just let up on the gas and it shifted into the higher gear. All without touching the shifter. But sloooooooooooooo. It was worse on performance than a Buick straight 8 with the Dynaflow transmission. Who remembers that one?

My grandfather had a 56 Ford- a blue 2 door sedan, straight six cylinder, three on a tree. The thing I remember most about it was the windshield wipers. They ran off the manifold vacuum instead of an electric motor. Wiped like crazy until you stepped on the gas and lost the vacuum. Then they almost stopped. Not a good thing to happen when you're driving in a torrential downpour.

My Chrysler had vacuum wipers also. One thing those wipers did well was to make you slow down in the rain because as an earlier post said, when you stepped on the gas too hard they would slow down or stop.

I had a friend who owned a 1953 Buick 2 door sedan with a straight eight, but it had a three on a tree instead of the Dynaflow. The transmission had a non-synchromesh 1st gear... oh what fun. The car's interior was so cavernous that we could get four guys and an eight foot toboggan inside. Try doing that in one of today's sedans.

Don't worry, Lee. You'll eventually catch up to my age and have lots of things to talk about that will be way before someone elses' time. And, then, when when you see a posting like that, you'll sit back in your chair and ponder (like I'm doing right now) "Wow, am I really that old?"

Here is one of the vehicles I used to be responsible for -- 1953 Pirsch open cab aerial. Not only did it have vacuum wipers - it had a pair on the outside AND the inside of the cab. It was a lot of fun in the pouring rain!

If you want to feel old, go to an antique store and look at all the stuff that you used to have and use when younger. I've corrected many a store owner on misidentified items in the store. When asked how I knew what they were, it was because I, my parents, or my grandparents had used them.
One recent incident that really made me feel old was when I was on a tour of an early 20th century mansion, the guide pulled out something that looked like a piece of chain mail. I was the only one who knew it was a pot scrubber. Ack!

And there were also vacuum horns. I had a great uncle with a 1948 Dodge that you had to start up just to sound the horn. I'm sure the wipers were also on vacuum.
