The Finest Hours - this didn't get the recognition it deserves. It's the true story about a famous Coast Guard rescue. We had gone to Astoria, OR last year to the Maritime Museum (an amazing place), so the movie impressed us even more.

Hollywood has not made a movie that qualifies as "GOOD" since 1939, so I would have to vote for "Gone With The Wind" as being the last GOOD movie I've watched.

We went to see Arrival. It was pretty good for the most part. But the ending had everyone scratching their heads!! It was like..... Is that it?

As far as old westerns, I watched the original Magnificent 7 a lot of good actors.

I just finished watching several movies identified here as the best. In case some of you are considering doing the same, here are my mini-reviews of some of them. Remember, these are opinions. I'm in no way trying to attack anyone else's opinions:

THE BIG LEBOWSKI. If for no other reason, watch this movie to see what all the hoopla is about. It appears to be aimed at people who live or want to live a certain lifestyle, including several of my friends who've raved about the movie. However, it did little for me -- excessive profanity, a thin plot and characters who make illogical and destructive decisions.
THE BIG HEAT. Definitely dark and sometimes shocking for the era in which it was filmed -- a spouse blown up by a car bomb, a gangster's girl scarred by hot coffee. Watch it if you're into film noir and/or detective movies.
THE FINAL HOURS. Suspenseful, well written and well acted; based on a true story. The movie's so well done that you'll want to get online to look up the events on which it is based.
EL DORADO. Good western that starts with twists of mistaken identity (many a Shakespeare comedy does the same). John Wayne and Robert Mitchum give good performances (or at least as good as they are capable of giving). But when I want to watch a western, I choose 3.10 TO YUMA with Russell Crowe (2007). It's also well written and has characters with depth that few other movies, western or not, reach.

I'd like to suggest 2 other good movies, since it's an election year: DAVE, with Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver, and THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT, with Michael Douglas and Annette Benning. Both are clever comedies that are a joy to watch.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Agreed! I love SciFi, but I am still scratching my head over Arrival. Good actors/actresses, but I am still unclear as to the point of the movie.

Dr. Strange - Went to see it on Christmas day, whoa it was crowded. Good movie! I tend to like the individual comic story lines over the group expansions.

Here's a wonderful comic/sad movie: THE APARTMENT, with Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine, Fred MacMurray and Ray Walston. Lemmon is perfect in the part; one of the few times I've seen MacMurray as a bad guy. Great atmosphere and music, too. And it takes place mostly during Christmas and New Year's.
