Which camping Lantern?

...do you use when you are camping? Specifically, do you use a liquid fuel Coleman, propane or (shudder) LED?

I ask because my hobby is collecting and restoring older Coleman GPAs (gas pressured appliances) like liquid fuel lanterns and stoves.

I still have two very old Coleman lanterns that I haven't used in a long time. But I do take battery operated lanterns with us now. I guess convenience won over nostalgia.

Lightbulb Camping Lantern

We carry a Milwaukee M18 LED lantern that gives off incredible light without having to pump or carry flammable fuel. The rechargeable battery also fits the Milwaukee M18 leaf blower that's handy for cleaning the campsite and leaves/debris off the RV before retracting the slide etc. Also carry the Milwaukee M18 drill to lower and raise the stabilizer jacks. The lantern also has a USB port to charge your phone!

I have a Coleman Northstar propane that I have packed but can't remember the last time I used it. Maybe when I still tent camped 5 years ago..

I'll take propane over liquid fuels or batteries any day!

I rebuilt my gasoline Coleman lantern 15 years ago because it sat for 10. I might be able to find it.

The propane lanterns are used for camping and power-fail several times a year.

But if you like the precision and finicky-ness of those machines, enjoy!

We use old liquid fuel Colemans as lanterns. I have 5 of them that are all pre '70s. I look for them at swap meets and often restore them.

I like the old gas coleman lanterns as well. I did convert one old 220 to kerosene though. I have a small collection of lanterns and stoves. I also have a couple of few dietz lanterns and 2 embury air pilots. they are nice and quiet and good for ambience lighting. cant read by them though.

I used to carry two of the green Coleman lanterns but switched to an LED a few years ago. I got tired of mantles breaking and the smell of fuel in my storage compartment.

That's funny! My way of looking at it is, *shudder, white gas!*.

What a great hobby though. I think it's super cool that people restore these wonderful old things. But to me, using them is a bit like shooting film in a 35 mm camera and using a dark room. Nostalgic, kinda fun, very cool, but very clunky and inconvenient.

That said I stopped using white gas almost 30 years ago. I went with a florescent tube lantern which served us well for many years. I really don't use it anymore. If I replaced it with anything it would be an LED lantern.

I realized this past trip that I no longer want to even use our hand held 6 volt lanterns. The small LED flashlights that are giveaways and fit in my pocket are excellent.

I think that old stuff is pretty cool; brings back a lot of memories.

My family used to use the old Coleman white gas stoves and lantern. I discovered recently that my dad still has them, and they're all still in good working order, but he doesn't use them often.

When the time came for me to get some of my own camping gear, I was fully immersed in propane, so that's what I have for lanterns and stoves. I've contemplated tossing them into the camper a couple times, but they just haven't made the journey yet. Those mantles, especially after they've been burned, are really fragile, and I could see myself having to replace them EVERY time I wanted to use my lantern. It might not happen that way, they tended to last a while under some pretty extreme conditions when I was younger...

Since I have a propane campfire, my long-term plan is to get a propane tree to put on the 20lb tank I carry for the campfire. Then I can mount my lantern on top, hook my little stove up to one of the other outlets and my campfire to the other and have a complete propane setup.

I still use a white gas fueled "Whisperlite" for backpacking though.

... mine, too.

Ahhh.... the smell of white gas and filling the lanterns at sunset.

The hisssss of the lantern while we played cards and board games.

Bed time: Watching from my bunk, Dad turned town the lantern at bit, checked on my younger brother and sister in their bunks, and then turned off the lantern and crawled into his bunk as the room darkened.

The hisss slowly quieted and the room gradually grew ever dimmer, dimmer. My eyes strained to see the table, chairs, ice box I knew were there in our one-room cabin but they slowly faded with the dimming light....

That old stuff brings back lots of memories. Lots of GOOD memories.

That's a really cool hobby. Alas, I use a rechargeable battery operated LED. Main reason is it was given to me as a Christmas present from my dad a few years ago.

I have two Coleman propane lanterns, one is auto light and one is match light and I use a propane distribution tree on a 20lb tank. Our BSA Troop also uses only Coleman propane lanterns mounted to propane distribution trees.
