cast iron waffel maker over campfire anyone have any experience

has anyone ever used one of the cast iron waffle makers over the campfire? if so , any recommendations of brand of waffle maker or style. I know the ones with the wood handles would not work well. any ideas would be welcome. thanks!! we rarely have electric so strictly over the campfire cooking.

Rome makes a nice cast iron waffle maker that is along the same lines as their pie irons. The only reason I never bought one is because I don't want to be the official waffle cooker for our family.

Props to you gentlemen....I have trouble enough making waffles with a teflon iron with a built-in thermostat and timer.....

What an idea! I think I have a few antique irons sitting in the kitchen cabinet. I think mine all have iron handles.

Season them up well, preheat over the fire before using and spray them with some cooking spray before you dump your batter in. Should work awesome.

went with the rome 1028 waffle maker. has the long detachable handles and can use it over the fire.

Detachable handles? All of my Rome products have the handles permanently pinned into the casting.

on rome's website it is listed as detachable handles for use on a stove or over the fire. easier to store also if the handles detach. it comes in Wednesday so will see then!!

Yeah, their website states that the handles are threaded into the cast iron so you can remove them.

Ive got one used it twice in 6 years takes to long for family of 5

after having used the waffle maker a few times I can say we really like it. takes a while to get some good heat in it but after that it makes some excellent waffles. we have been making stuffed waffles which are excellent!! we are very pleased.

If it was just me and the wife I'd probably buy one, but fixing waffles one at a time for two adults and three teenagers would be a huge time consuming chore and buying 5 waffle irons is not economically feasible.

Maybe I'll buy one for an empty nester gift to myself someday!!

I tried them, seasoned them as i did all my other cast iron but never could get the cooking time just right and they burned or stuck every time. Finally gave up completely.
