Door latch

We have a new 31UL and are having trouble with the door latch sticking. Anyone else had this problem and if so how did you correct it without taking the rig back to the dealer?

There are screws on the INSIDE of the latch you can loosen and move the whole latch around then tighten. It's been a while but I think 3 or maybe 4 screws. Use a #2 phillips driver. Be sure to get the screws very tight or you will be doing it again next trip.

If that does not work the hinge will need to be "sprung" similar to how body shops do it using jack and blocks. Last resort, take to dealer for hinge replacement. My door would not line up correctly so the hinge was replaced.

Can the striker plate be adjusted on this unit?

The striker will only offer slight vertical adjustment to compensate door sag which occurs when the door is used to pull up on as you enter the coach resulting in hinge being tweaked.

Correct latch adjustment is needed to set depth and alignment of the latch pin heads so the door does not "drag" or "stick" on the striker plate when opened and closed. Sticking doors normally are caused by the latch pin heads contacting the latch plate. Allowing the door to fly back, even though it has a gas strut, can bend the whole hinge enough to effect latch depth. It is a good idea to hold door with your hand as it opens to prevent this.

Loosen the 4 screws INSIDE the latch with door open. Now find the 2 screws in door edge, one above the bolt and one below the bolt. Turning these screws will move entire latch assembly toward or away from the striker plate and will also align the pins to the striker slots. Be sure you get the heads of the pins located so they do not drag on the plate when door is closed. This is hard to describe but easy to see when you get into it.

Once the adjustment screws in door edge are correct, tighten the 4 screws on inside of latch nice and secure. It helps to have someone hold door as you do this.

We have a similar problem on our 31UL. Our door latch (or maybe it is the door) sometimes requires extreme force to open. At other times it works correctly. I hope we see an answer here.

Mowdoc, I posted my comment before I saw that you had already provided a solution. Thanks.

Thanks Mowdoc. I had to change my door latch and have struggled to get the proper adjustment. Your post will be a big help.

My door sticks in cold weather and works fine when the sun heats the door.

Hi all,

We have the same but have noticed it is temperature dependant. Cold (<40°) the door is hard to open. As soon as temp rises, the door opens easily. I am afraid to adjust the latch because the door might rattle even more while travelling in comfortable temperatures.

Well it is cold here now so maybe I will wait for warm weather before I make any changes.
