Suggestions for water heater issue

Fireman,
Did you hit the white reset button?

If yes and still not working, I am posting s some possible fixes from
I got from Girard contact last month. Note: my issue was
sail fin being restricted.

page 1 from Girard contact:

irst, go out and take the door off of the water heater, and peel the front edge of the copper heat exchanger box back so you can get at an angle and see the igniter. Have someone else turn on the water, and watch the igniter – is there spark going from the TIP of the igniter to the burner? Do you smell gas?

If the spark looks good and you don’t smell gas, go back up to that reset button/limit switch. Like I said, the white switch with the button is connected to a black switch right above it. There are 2 orange wires together there, combined to go into the black switch. There is 1 orange wire coming out of the bottom of the white switch. Unhook the wires and jump them together and start the hot water. If the water heater fires up, then we have a bad limit switch combo. If there is still no flame, we will go to the sail switch.

remaining info from Scott...

The sail switch is the switch with the attached triangular paddle that goes into the exhaust tube. The switch has a red and an orange wire going to it. Try moving the stem of the sail forward – does it move freely, and spring back into place? If it doesn’t, try to free it up by adjusting the exhaust tube. If it won’t free up, let me know. Have someone turn on the hot water, and manually move the sail stem forward again – does the water heater fire up? If not, let’s try to jump the sail switch, and to do that, please follow this sequence:
1) Turn off the on/off switch
2) Turn the hot water on at the faucet
3) Unplug both the red and orange wires from the sail switch
4) Hook up your jumper wire to the red wire
5) Turn the on/off switch on (the fan should now start)
6) Connect the other end of your jumper wire to the orange wire
Now the sail switch is jumped…..does the water heater ignite?

Hopefully one of these tips helps you find the problem. If not, we move into voltages. Do you have a voltmeter that you could use to check voltages?

Thanks -
Scott Thomas

My red button above the on/off switch will not light up. And I can't get a reset switch to reset on the white one

below is more info and a youtube video on where the reset button is...

hope this helps. if not call the Girard contact.

-----
We were on our first trip of the year last weekend and the water heater stopped working. It would start up like it was going to heat the water but would shut down after about 45 seconds. We found the following video that shows where the reset button is. Evidently, it is a safety feature that engages when it senses the water temp is too high. Pressed the little white button and turned the temperature dial down and voila, hot water.

The secret reset button is not readily apparent.

After 18 months of aggravation, we finally had our dealer replace our second generation Girard with a Suburban tank model.

I agree. The fine folks who put these things together need to mature the technology a bit before they're ready for prime time. I'll let someone else do my beta testing. Until then, I'll stick with something I know works and is relatively trouble free.

GREAT NEWS Fireman.. glad it's working.

Note: In my complaints to my dealer on temperature spikes using the
tankless system, he said if I wanted I could replace with a standard
system and supposedly Jayco would pick up the cost...

So, I will give the system the rest of the year in more trials to determine
whether to keep or replace.

Happy Adventures.

Had a tankless unit for over two years with no problems. It's all in learning how to use them.

There is a recall on the Girard water heater due to a faulty gas valve. Not sure if this has been addressed here yet or not, but just putting it out there. It might ease some of the headaches people are having. To be clear, it's not a safety issue, but it is a failure-to-light issue.

I have the tankless in my 35UN also, First time out I hated it, then went to Jayco for a few other things, they told me how to use it, Now we love it. works great, never run out of hot water, Basically, you control the water temp in the shower with water heater control in the bathroom, not the shower hot and cold controls, Only use the Hot water side with the preset temp on the heater dial itself, works like a charm.

Glad you got your issue fixed!

I had to replace my Girard Tankless water heater. In the rear of the heater is a magnetic flow switch which broke. The folks at Girard said it couldn't happen but when I showed them the magnet that was in the water jacket they wanted to send me a new switch. I replaced the water heater with a Truma AquaGo Instant Water Heater and it is the best investment you can make. It really is instant hot water that always comes to the taps at 120 degrees. No matter how many facets you have on it is still 120 degrees. It's flame never cycles on and off like on a Girard and others so you get hot and cold spikes but rather adjust the flame from 20,000 to 60,000 btu's and has a mixing vessel to keep a constant 120 degree water temperature. The only problem is they won't sell direct so you have to go to a dealer to have it installed. It fits in the same opening as the Girard or any opening for that matter because it has multiple brackets and face plates and took less than one hour to install. I now have hot water like I have at home. If anyone is interested in this new unit contact Chantal Hershberger Customer Care Coordinator at (574) 208-6891 and tell her I referred you and you will get a discount at least that is what I was told. And yes Jayco Paid for it.

dtjommysr,

On our 15 Precept 31ul I have had mixed results with out Girard tankless system.
Have had to hit white reset button, have had to call Girard twice to
figure out heating issues (was restricted sail fin) and hot/cold spikes.
(after removing shower diverter replacing with oxygenics and using
adjustable H2o regulator this last trip the shower was much better).

I am on the fence as to keeping system or replacing. Dealer said
jayco would to have it replace with standard system.

I have seen videos on the Truma system and have been interested in
it's ability to "deliver". Your post seems to have me more interested
in swapping out, especially of Jayco will pay. Is Chantal at Jayco or
Truma?

If you have any more updates or info on the upgrade let us know
or send me a message.

Mike

p.s the girard system has us control the temp from the Bathroom
control setting and for showers only use the hot water valve.

when replacing with Truma how does the system function in
regards to hot/cold regulation?

Thanks again.

Anyone care to comment on the price range of a Truma?

Chantal works for Truma. The units cost between 1,000. and 1,100 depending on what model you get. I got the more expensive one with a shut off and decalcifier switch mounted in the coach . This was the best investment I have made. It really is instant hot water and it is fixed at 120 degrees. You really have to mix cold water with it to take a great and endless HOT shower. Jayco will only pay the difference between the Girard and Truma if they have to replace your water heater. I have had issues with mine since day one and mine almost blew up so I can't say what Jayco can do for you. I do not work for Truma or have any affiliation with them in any way except to tell you how happy I am with this unit. Again it was the best investment I have made. I was told that if you tell Chantal My name Thomas Gingerelli you will get a discount and she will help you get one but I can't say that is true or just a come on. Her employees came to the campground and installed it on the spot and only charged me one hour $100.00 to install it and it was more than one hour. I love this unit. Good Luck
