Water pump keeps running

2017 31UL - About half the time the water pump shuts off when you close a faucet, and half the time it keeps running for a period of seconds. There have been times when it just kept on running until you finally shut off the power to it. The tech at Jayco told us that there is nothing wrong with it; the pump in our 2014 Melbourne never did anything like that. What have others experienced?

Mine typically runs for just a few seconds after shutting water off. If it runs for longer than that then I look for leaks. Check your filter bowl on your pump, mine was loose and pump just kept running

They keep running a few seconds more to build up pressure. Once the correct pressure is reached, it'll shut off.

If the water system still has some air in it, the pump will start late and run for a while.

Once you've gotten all the air out and the pump runs for more than a few seconds, go find the leak.

Here is another head scratcher with the water pump. Flush the toliet and the pump will do one pulse about every three seconds. You will also hear a metallic click at the same time in girard water heater. You can quickly open and close any faucet including the toilet or by turning the power off you can stop the pulsing. This will happen with any faucet - I used the toliet as an extreme example. Also this happens on shore or battery power.

Our pump was doing this when we was off-grid using the pump and our fresh water tank. I got to looking for the leak and found the Winterization Valve for switching in the short hose that you put down inside the pink stuff bottle was not fully turned off. The leak was sucking a small amount air directly into the pump thru this not well closed valve...

Finding the water pump should not be too hard. It makes a very loud noise when running. The problem is sometimes it is mounted behind a panel and you have to remove some screws to actually get to it. Mine in on the floor next to the Hot water heater inside a cabinet.

As others have stated, sounds like you have an air leak or water leak somewhere. There are a lot of water connections in an RV, but the most likely culprit is at the pump itself.

Water Pump Pressure Test

The technician at Jayco's Service Center in Middlebury said that they ran a "water pump pressure test" and it was normal. Wouldn't that rule out a leak?

One leak that can go undetected is the toilet flush valve. It may slowly trickle into the bowl and reduce plumbing pressure causing pump to cycle.
The test is to completely dry the bowl and put some tissue in it with pump on.

Nope. That just proves the pump will build the specified pressure and then stop.

You've got something more subtle.

Random quick run after all faucets are off for a while is a leak on the pressurized side. Not your symtoms either.

Your's is sounding like air is getting in ahead of the pump. Causes:
- Misaligned intake strainer cover
- antifreeze bypass valve open or leaking
- Winterizing shutoff to the water tank not open fully
- cracked to kinked suction line to the FW tank
- Low water level in the FW tank.

Double - and triple- check the suction side of your water system....

You'll find the problem.

Or just sell the RV before the problem gets worse.

Precept is in storage at the moment, but you folks have given me plenty to think about and investigate once we're back in action. Thanks.

You can actually use the antifreeze bypass valve to help identify which direction the problem is in...

Goto to the bypass and stick the short tube down in to a bucket of water. If the pumps comes on and sucks up the water when you open a sink faucet then quits running when you turn the sink faucet off then your problems may be something between the pump and the fresh water tank.

I got caught one time with the fresh water tank almost dry and my pump started doing a low hum.. finally figured it was low on water so added water and the hum quit and all started working proper again...

Update: The issue of "water pump keeps running" has disappeared entirely on its own. If one must have problems, that's the kind to have!
