Another Tongue Toolbox Mod

I got one of these for nothing so here is the best use for it. Watch the Video to see how I made sure the gas struts wouldn't hit the posts on the battery. Otherwise, a pretty easy and self explanatory install. I will be adding a vent tomorrow when I get to the hardware strore.

I think I will probably add a 12VDC outlet up there somewhere and maybe some lights on the side of the toolbox directed towards the diamond plate shield on the trailer for some light up around the tongue of the trailer at night. Who knows what else....Any ideas?

Here is a link to another site where it's all together on the thread
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fu...d/25303415.cfm

Here are some pics of the install in order.

Drilled hole and installed grommet for wiring to pass through. Wound up using a dishwasher drain hose to pass though the hole and the wiring to go through it.

Had to notch the bottom half of the battery box to get around the strut brackets. Otherwise, this is coming together as planned.

I used 5/16X6" bolts and the pieces that comes with a u-bolt to anchor it up on the tongue.

Installed battery. Used some 3/4" cedar to wedge it in place, and it's tight.

Used my iPhone and turned the video recorder on and set the phone down in the toolbox with a hockey puck LED light turned on to see what kind of clearance I had when the strut came down towards the battery when closed. I also opted to put the battery on the street side since that is where the negative(-) terminal is...Shouldn't pose any problems.

Plenty of room for the spring bars and other misc. junk

Finished product.

Very nice. Only concern I would have is - how are you venting the battery?

The hardware store was closed this afternoon (Sunday), so I didn't get a chance to get a vent. I will be installing tomorrow. Not sure what I am going to get for one, but I am sure I can dig something up. I think I am going to put it right in front of the battery to the right of the handle of the toolbox.

Will post pics of that tomorrow, hopefully.

gilldawg79-- It might not be pretty but you put a plumbing vent cap on the side of the box, or on the top if the top will still open. You could always just drill some holes along the top of the back of the box, the overhang of the top might keep the water out of it. Just incase you can drill a couple holes in the bottom for drainage, thats what I did. Larry

Added vents...Take a look

Drilled 2 1 1/16" holes for sink drain strainer baskets. Worked perfectly.

May have to put some screen in them to keep the small critters out, but all in all, I think it worked out pretty good.

Great looking job. I like it. So how much did the box weigh? I wonder if a matching propane cover would look too gaudy ? What are your thoughts? Too much like Airstream maybe.

If I needed those sink strainers it's gonna be tough getting them out after the gorilla glue job.

The box might weigh 20 lbs. A propane cover would be awesome and looking like an airstream is a good thing. I am biased though. I had a 1969 27' Overlander that I kick myself in the rear everyday for getting rid of it. I love my Jayco though.

That box came with a piece of aluminum angle in it for a tray to ride on the length of the box. I had to cut the welds to get it out so I could get the battery in. I then cut the rail about 20" so I could put it back in and utilize the tray. Then, I glued that piece of angle back in with that Gorilla Glue, and I think it's more sturdy than it was. That is some good stuff.

I was wondering did you have to extend the wiring to get into the box? You may have wrote it but I probably missed it. Thanks.
