Best way to add shelves in closets??

Looks good Jamie... how did you fasten the furring to the walls? Looks like screws but did you use inserts, anchors or what?

I just screwed right into the walls. I made sure that the top and bottom screws were into some solid wood and made sure that the shelves fit very snug so that the furring strips don't have much room to move seems to be working well so far.

Here's what I did today. Went to the home store and got two pieces of 48" x 16" wire shelving, and eight 3M command hooks. The rear closet in our trailer is set up for hanging garments, and we needed the storage more than we wanted to hang stuff up -- the closets in the bedroom are good enough for that. The space is 48" high, so taking the easy way out, I just divided it by three and made the shelves 16" off the bottom, and 16" apart. A quick snip with the bolt cutters cut the 48" long shelves down to 40".

Here's what the finished job looks like:


The closet space was 40" wide, and I had 19" of depth to play with before running into trouble; the vent pipe for the black water tank runs through this space, so a 16" deep shelf would have to do:



I used four hooks per shelf, two along the back and one on either side:





These are 3 lb. hooks. If it turns out they're not strong enough I'll just buy some more. And they're not permanent, so if we ever decide to move/remove them, at least I didn't damage the inside of the trailer.

Looks great! I plan(ed) to do something very similar with our small hanging closets in the bedroom. Now on hold; DW is back pedaling. Initially said she wanted shelves, now not so sure.

Keep an eye on the covering the Command hooks adhere to. There have been some reports that the covering may peel off. Please let us know if you see signs of that.

Thanks, I will. If I see any sign of them pulling off, I might add a few more hooks to each shelf to spread out the load a bit more, or find a different fastening method.

I was wondering if the shelving could be installed with the front edge going up instead of down and by doing that keep things from sliding off the shelves better?

I have installed them "upside down" to help to keep things in place as you mention. I've done that in home closets and in my trailer.

Depending upon overall length and the design of the shelf unit, installing them that way can affect the strength of the unsupported front edge. The shelves in a trailer will not likely be long enough for that to be a real concern.

All my command hook's started coming loose as it has warmed up around here. I have resorted to a small 1/2 #4 very thin screw through each hook to give it a little more support. We didn't even have much weight on them that they gave out. I just use them for linens and kid clothes. I think the heat in the camper just made the glue tacky and they gave out.

I wanted to use wire shelving in the narrow closets on either side of the front bed, but didn't want to use the Command hooks after hearing about the adhesive not holding up to the extremes of RV interiors. The DW didn't want me drilling holes in her new trailer so we compromised and bought 2 plastic 4-shelf units at Wally World. The inside of the closet is 14.5 inches wide, but the narrow door opening meant I had to assemble them inside the closet. I cut down the plastic pipe uprights to 9.25 inches each and was able to stack three shelves before the angle of the front wall prevented me from going any higher. These shelves are 14 inches wide and 22 inches deep. They cost $14.95 per package. They are just wide enough to rest on the interior closet bracing and not on the thin finish panel at the bottom of the closet. It took less than 30 minutes to do my first mod.

Hockeydad, I did the same thing in the closets on either side of the bed. It works great and no holes to drill or command hooks to fall down 😊

Lots of good suggestions. I am surprised anyone has had any success with the Command Hooks. I bought 2 packs for this trailer and have used almost all the strips, but they kept falling off, even with no weight on them.

DW first used rubbing alcohol to clean the area where the strip was going to go, then followed the instructions for holding pressure on the strips.

She put up several for holding clothes etc. in the bedroom and they are holding just fine.

So far all of ours are holding save for one (installed in the pass-through storage on a piece of unfinished framing, no hope for that one from the beginning). DW uses them all over the trailer, primarily for holding towels.

We have the same RV and we went to ikea and bought a closet organizer that hangs from the rod. It's exactly the same size as the closet space, organizes all the kids clothes and other items. Cost about $10 and no drilling, or mangling required!
