Bumper Safety Strut - failure with installation
Hi guys,
I installed the safety struts to reinforce the bumper as I will carry my bikes in the back. I followed the instructions and used c-clamp to keep the strut in place while drilling, however, it moved a bit and now I do not have the contact between the strut and the bumper. The second one is installed correctly, as I used additionally a bottle jack to keep the strut in place.
What can be done with this to have any benefit of having the strut in the back?
Thanks!

If access to welder... Slight cut bend... Weld
No access.... Heat and bend
Shim it?
Just the things off the top of my head

when I installed mine I could have put the strut on either side of the frame rail. so if yours is on the outside of the frame rail, move it to the inside of the frame rail and re-drill the holes. I did not drill all the way through so if you drilled all the way through that wont work.

Hey max2bob- Not to steal the thread, but how is that Safety Strut working out for you? Do you feel it helped that much so you feel comfortable that the flimsy bumper will now hold the weight of the bikes in a stable position without bouncing around and falling off?
Just wondering.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

Thank you! I will try to shim it, as it should be the easiest. If it does not work, I will try other solutions as mentioned in this thread.

Thanks, bono. I was also looking at these Safety Struts for the same reason, so if nothing else, you gave me a great installation tip!

until my bumper falls off that will be tough to quantify. they do lend some support for the bumper, that's for sure and they are rated for some decent weight. I did look at all the reviews I could find and for the most part people were pleased with them. that being said though , until their bumpers fall off they will remain pleased.
for the investment and little time it took to install them I am happy so far.

You may also consider a flat 90 degree bracket bolted to the safety strut.

If all else fails, drill one of the holes out a little larger in the bracket so you can pivot it back square and then tighten it up.
