Dogs and Screen Doors

We will be taking our two dogs with us in our new to us Jay Feather, and was wondering what people did about the screen doors (we have two). I really like the ventilation provided by the screens so I am reluctant to put a solid cover over the bottom half. Has anyone used the heavy pet screening I was wondering if the doors were too flimsy to stretch the thicker screen or the channel too small.

Thanks for the help.

go to the nearest Lowes or Home Depot pick up a grate for screen doors and mount it on the lower half, protects the screen , I also put a different latch on for more secutity Like a Hook and eye

I would put Lexan in the bottom and leave the top open for circulation. You can get it cut to size at Lowes.

This is what we did and it works great.

Have you considered training the dogs?

We taught ours when we first got the htt. She rarely touches the door.

We found a plastic/bamboo sliding baby gate (that was broken) in the swap shed at our dump. We removed the rivets that hold the two 24" sliding sections together and the locking mechanism, so it was just a plastic screen with a bamboo frame. Rattle canned the bamboo black to match the screen door, and used a few black command velcro strips to hold it on. Here is DH's blog about it. Jayco X213 Pet Screen – Restricted Ayerspace

My parent's dog's tended to not consider screen doors as obstacles, so we installed 1/4" hardware cloth over the bottom half. 2 hits and they started to consider it a 'door'.

SWMBO's dog is a bit brighter. He nudged at the screen on the trailer once. Considered it a solid object. No problems.

I got a piece of 1/8in plexiglass from Lowes and cut it to fit with a metal blade jigsaw. it sits in the small gap behind the screen and protects it from the inside. Haven't really noticed any reduction in circulation since the top is still open and it allows my big Rotti mix "Pal" to continue his squirrel hunting watch from inside the trailer.

Fortunately, we don't have this problem with our dog. But I have friends that do and they use the plexiglass idea as well.

We trained our Brittany to not touch the door. He will lie on the floor right by the screen door and watch the world go by.

Well use the pet proof screen at home. (Cats were climbing on it)
Our sliding screen door frame is flimsier than the trailer screen door.
Works very well.
