Fantastic Fan/other powered vents
Just got the new camper home yesterday, and now it's time to start the changes that we'll want to make. First on the list is the roof vents. The one over the Master bed has no fan and we'd like to add one. The one in the bathroom has a fan, but it is a huge piece of ****! It doesn't even have a lid lift, but just opens some side vents in the lid. I'd rather have an empty hole over this thing!
So, with that said, does anyone have suggestions on what to get? I'd like to place a pretty strong emphasis on low power consumption and quality. I think I remember hearing that a certain model of the Fantastic Fan was high quality and lower power draw, but can't find the information now.
Thanks for any information!

I will be installing a Vortex II Multi-Speed Fan in our bathroom to replace the factory P.O.S. fan. If you check youtube you'll find it is any easy swap and DOES NOT require outside roof modification (the Fantastic Fan requires roof modification).
We had our dealer that same fan (Vortex II Multi-Speed Fan) in a rear roof vent that did not have power. It seems to work very well, but haven't used it for camping yet.

What do you mean Oldman?
The Fantastic fan doesn't need roof modification if you're modifying an actual fantastic vent.

All roof vents (fans) use the same size hole... just pull the old one off and put the new one on

Like me, the OP (Cdash) doesn't have a Fantastic Fan. He has the factory P.O.S. fan.

What do they put in your unit?
I don't understand manufacturers, why not just use the same line of accessories in all the models.

I removed the bathroom single speed ceiling fan and replaced it with a Fan-Tastic vent (3speed/thermostat) and reinstalled bathroom fan in the front bedroom. No cutting necessary.
I also have Max Air vent covers mounted over them so we can leave them open without worrying about rain getting in.

Medium 653 SCFM 2.29 Amps
Low 478 SCFM 1.86 Amps

True, but the cowl (not sure if this is the correct name) may be different. The installations I've seen (never done it myself) show removing the putty/sealant on the roof to remove the existing cowl and resealing after installing the Fantastic Fan.
I hope I'm wrong! I'd love to have a Fantastic Fan in my bathroom!

What ever it is you end up doing either use vent cover, or make sure you have a rain sensor.
More then once (in previous units) I've left the vent open in a rain storm

This is what I've found (one of several) for installing a Fantastic Fan. Is it wrong?

Mounted the Max Air covers over the vent fans and you do not have to worry anymore. We have never had any rain come in through the Max Air covers.... well worth the money and ease of mind. They are left open all the time, unless we are forced to use the AC. One less thing to worry about...

But if you already have a fantastic vent installed then it is just a matter of installing the motor and the bottom section with the circuit board of different model functions.
If you already have the fan and motor, then just swap the bottom section.
I, personally, wouldn't be afraid to do a full vent swap. Yank it, clean up the dicor and butyl with a plastic putty knife and reinstall.
All though I've never squeezed out a tube of dicor, it sure looks easy.

Upgrading the bathroom vent took about an hour and a half from start to finish. It was an easy swap. Installing the old vent fan in the front opening took about the same amount of time. The part that took longer on the front vent was running electrical from the ceiling light to the vent opening.. then I needed to put a pull-chain switch on it so DW could reach it. There is a little more gap in the front trim plate and the actual fan, but a piece of white rubber filled it in perfectly.

Don:
Did you replace the OEM bathroom fan with a Fantastic brand fan?
If yes, did you have to unseal and remove the original cowl from the roof and then install the Fantastic Fan cowl and reseal the roof?
If no, what fan did you use and did you have to unseal and reseal anything on the roof?
Thanks.

I used a Vortex three speed when I had to change mine. It was easy as there was power there already. The issue is finding constant power if your lights are on a wall switch and no power exists.

I have replaced the OEM fan with a Fantastic fan as well. Excellent mod for lower power consumption, lower noise, and more air flow.
Yes it required removing the old fan as shown in your link above. Easy to do though. I did not replace the butyl tape or scrape it off. It was in good condition so I just put the new fan on top of it and added some Dicor overtop of the flange and screw heads.
Cheers

Yes it was the Fan-Tastic model 5000RBT. I removed everything from the old fan and replaced it with all the new fan parts and sleeve. It was easy, if you do not mind sitting on the roof. As I mentioned it took about an hour and a half total. Yes, I had to unseal the old, cleaned it up a bit and I used the Dicor 502-LSW self leveling sealant and let it ooooooz out the sides as I tightened it down.

Thanks for the info.
We had a Fantastic Fan in our class B and I really prefer that to the Vortex II. However, our unit is still under warranty so we're not going to risk messing with the roof for at least another year and wanted to improve the ventilation sooner than that. The Vortex II will be OK for us for a while.

I put in a Fantastic Fan, a MaxxFan as well as just a plain vent with no fan (see my mods section). For the money the MaxxFan (in my opinion) is the better product. It has an included cover so you don't need a separate one. It has 10 speeds and is much quieter than the Fantastic Fan. It has an automatic on/off temperature setting and the lid (hatch) has two lifters, instead of one, and is a much more stout system. It also has a lower profile when opened or closed. I'm actually thinking of replacing the Fantastic Fan with the MaxxFan.
