I used the brand name Varathane Premium, oil based, colour: Mission Oak #263 (shown on the can, on red oak), 946 ml size. It is low odour. The pine that I used was previously used as wainscotting on a wall in a hall way so it had an oxidized, darker yellow hue. I made a story board starting with one coat of stain and progressed to the desired darkness. I can't remember how many coats, I think it was 3 or 4. It will depend on what type of grain and wood hardness that is used.
The rossettes were a different story. I bought them at Homely Despot and I think they are poplar. I was afraid that they wood look more like they had a solid paint so I applied it lightly and the stain was not as consistant as the pine so I ended with a darker colour. Depending on the light in the room the stain is slightly darker than the origional.
Works for me!
