Paper towel holder mod

Since I got this 26BH back in March I've been trying to figure out where to put a paper towel holder.

I was beginning to think that the only place was below the window to the right of the cabinets.

Finally I thought of the "blank" between the two sets of cabinet doors.

I removed the thin plywood cover this morning and got to work.

I made a contained recessed area by cutting a tip and bottom that were curved on the back. I recessed and epoxied button magnets to the top of the bottom plate.

I took some aluminum flashing I had in storage and enclosed the towel holder and then mounted it inside the cabinets.

Then I cut a base a bit smaller than the bottom plate, recessed and epoxied button magnets in the bottom to align with the magnets on top of the plate.

I mounted a 1" dowel, painted it and when it was dry I put the paper towels on the dowel, slid the assembly in and felt the magnets grab with a satisfying click.

It's easy to remove when it's empty, it's secure and it's out of the way. It's just an added bonus that the aluminum flashing matches the appliances and the cabinet pulls.

You did great on that one. Wish I had another blank panel to remove now.

I love what I call "Stupid Simple" stuff (the stuff where you see it and smash your forehead with your hand saying "Why didn't I think of that!!").
This is a great use of wasted space. And the added aluminum flashing makes it look like it belongs there. Fantastic job!

This is exactly why I love this area of the forum. There are so many talented folks out there who are always coming up with incredible new ideas. Nicely done sir.

WOW! What a great idea! Thank you for sharing. We purchased our Melbourne 24L last month and have been trying to figure out where to put our paper towel roll. Our unit does not have the space like your does but it is great seeing your "thinking outside the box."

My apologies for not seeing this sooner. I've been busy with a much bigger "mod" - ripping out the master bath shower in our house and installing a new one.

I didn't take any pics of the magnet side, but I could when I get home.

All it is is a "D" shaped base with three 1/2" holes drilled just deep enough to epoxy two 7/16" button magnets in each hole leaving them flush with the surface. Those magnets line up with matching holes/magnets on the bottom plate of the assembly.

Here are a couple pics of the bottom. I sanded the paint a bit so that the magnets are visible. Ignore the pocket hole on the right. The board I used was a cast-off from another project.

The base that this sits in is a mirror image with matching magnets.
