I bought a small can of poly for our kitchen table. I don't know if it is compatible with what is on the table from the factory. Has anyone coated their table?

If it is compatible I think the only place you might run into a problem is at the edge where the corner bead snaps in and you have a tiny open edge all the way around. I don't think it will flow in and fill properly.
Your table is coated with a "Catalyzed Conversion Finish", just like your cabinet doors. It is an extremely hard, 2-part finish that simply can't be duplicated at home, and may not allow the new finish to adhere properly. I'd suggest a good cleaning, rinsing, and light sanding with a 150 or 180 grit sandpaper to encourage adhesion. Just be careful not to sand off any of the stain. One of the nice things about poly's is they are compatible with virtually any other finish. I'd suggest using an exterior grade poly, since it will be more resistant to moisture, spills, and cleaning. I like Min-wax Spar Polyurethane in a satin or matte finish.

Thanks for the replies. The finish on our table is really getting bad and we want to coat it before the color is compromised. We have lots of experience finishing wood. I just don't want to have a chemical reaction with lots of bubbles showing up.
