This thread was almost as controversial as one I started about firearms in the RV Actually a lot more so even....

I'm in the camp where if there was any issue, what so ever, regarding harming the environment at any measurable degree by poking a couple holes in your battery box, the EPA would be involved in a nano second. More so -We're actually doing the environment a favor by preventing a potential toxic soup from building up that most people would just chuck on the ground anyway. Good ventilation is required, might as well poke a few holes in the bottom and keep your battery dry. Don't know about you guys, but the idea of having mystery liquid sloshing around in my battery box is a concern in and of itself, the less time this 'mystery water' is in there, the less chance it has of actually becoming something that's worse for the planet. Dump it to the ground while it's still just water...

A whole lot to do about nothing. in my humble opinion. I think I'll just buy a couple of those boxes with the holes already in it when I upgrade my battery bank. Thanks for the links

I'm going out and am going to dump my grey tanks on the ground.... I think I will then fill them and dump them again just because.

I can't believe a guy drilled some holes in his battery box and the enviromentalists lose all their marbles.

Save yourself some trouble and just drill four holes in your grey tank

I think one of the techs took a dump in my black tank before I took delivery. I remember the first day I brought it home "Brand New" I assumed ALL the tanks were empty, and was learning how to flush the black, in my driveway.. virgin camper right?. Was a *brand new TT* I assumed you could have sipped a drink from the dump valve without a concern. I pulled the handle on the valve and orange slurry / toilet paper chunks and chocolate trout hit my gutter. There's still a faint line of dissolved paper running down my gutter, to the next street drain where it dumps into the river. Good times.

Where were we? Talking about phantom battery / rain schmeg water hitting the interstate at 65 mph? I digress....

The simplest mod ever

I was looking at my battery boxes today which have never been touched since the rig was new. Both have 4 ea. 1/4 in. holes drilled in each corner.
Go figure! Both were dry with no evidence of ever having liquid in them.

you guys are hillarious!
the boxes in my last rv and the ones in my new 321 "CAME WITH" 1.5" holes in them. my first rv had no battery boxes...just two batteries on metal pull out trays that were drilled out in the 4 corners. I never thought a thing about them and i still dont.

oh, and bigbird...i like your idea of drilling holes in the gray tanks...make em really small and no-one will ever notice the drainage ;-)

i think there are more interesting issues to discuss but this was a fun thread to read! thanks.

Very funny. But I have a question If you have gone to the trouble of putting batteries in a plastic battery box with a lid, why is rain/water getting into the battery box in the first place? Is that not the real problem here?

It comes in through the holes in the bottom.

Via vents in the cover:

So then, what is the point of the battery boxes in the first place, if not to protect the batteries from rain, fallout, dust, ozone, wash water, etc? My battery boxes on my trailers were mounted outside in similar boxes, but without the top vents. They didn't have a problem with water in the boxes, and I never had to deal with putting holes in the bottom to drain out the acid formed by the mixture of the water with the effluent of charging and hydrogen outgassing. Sounds from here as if it would be better to deal with keeping the water out in the first place, no?

Mine was vented on top for any off gassing from charging. It was in my opinion to protect the battery to some degree from sun and weather and not so much from a would be battery thief. Mine ended up full of water after some heavy rain and I was concerned the water across the posts might short the battery out so I drilled 2 holes in bottom of the box and had no other problems. Smarter venting might not have been a bad idea but seems to be the norm in mort of the boxes I have had in boats and campers. And the black tank story cracked me up

I will never look at my batteries the same way again.

Note: I was out on a road trip about three years back and we had tons of blowing rain and needless to say the battery box filled up all they way to the top with water. The water was splashing all over the cables, top of the battery and spilling out of the box during travel. I immediately drilled holes in the bottom of the box to allow the water to escape.
I've had similar happen to me on a previous camper. Ended up corroding the thermistor and wiring feeding the battery, only found when needing the battery to power up. Long story, short, is that drain holes were promptly added after rewiring the battery box! As said above, many car batteries don't reside in hermetically sealed boxes...

Go Blue!
