Tool Box Behind Propane Tanks? Anyone do it?

I am thinkinking of mounting a diamond plate tool box behind my propane tanks. Anyone else try this? I was thinking I would use u bolts so that I wouldnt have to drill into the tounge. I would like to have more storage options for all of my hitch stuff and tools that I bring along. Also, obviously, the battery will have to go in there as well. Pics would be great if anyone has done it.

I have been thinking about doing this as well. I may need to move my LP tanks forward slightly though. I have about 1.5-2 inches before touching my jack post. That should give me enough clearance for one.

I have been thinking of this also , just have'nt gotten around to it yet , trying to figure out what size to get , the ubolts will be fine to use .

That is where I put my 6-6volt batteries... it should work well for you there. Just make sure you can open the tool box before you bolt it down.

Found a diamond plate tool box at Lowes-on clearance for $134.00. Going back a little later to get it. Will mount it next week and post some pics. It is a tool box that would mount on the side rails of a pickup truck, the cut out in the bottom will allow for my snap-up brackets. Can't wait.

Also watch your tongue weight and GVWR. I don't know what your definition of tool box is-- but the one I carry weighs about 100 lbs. and if I had a bigger box (like the one I'm thinking your looking at) I'd sure as heck fill it (wouldn't be able to control myself).

Anyways here's what I'm thinking.
Your trailer's hitch weight dry is 500lbs.
Now add:
2 Propane tanks= 65lbs
2 batteries-= 130lbs
and now a tool box= 100lbs

Your at 295lbs + 500 hitch= 795lbs tongue weight. That 800lbs weight needs to be figured into your weight planning. Everything you put into your truck (including the trailer's tongue weight) goes towards (or deducts from) your GVWR which is 7700 (looking at the owners manual). Check out your door sticker to see if you are getting close to that figure. If you want... but here is the kicker:

****A class III with a WD system on your truck can carry 740lbs...
(right out the 2006 owners manual)

I don't know that 100lbs is a big deal on your TV, but I was bored so I looked it up. Your probably GTG. I mainly wrote this up for ppl that have smaller SUV's that might have issues.



These weights add up fast!

I'm always considering numbers in shooting long range and I guess that carries over into my everyday thinking. Again sorry if I came off wrong.

I will mount the tool box tomorrow. It weighs about 40 lbs empty. It is not that big-only 48 inches wide. you will get a better idea once the pics are posted. As for the weight-the items I am planning on using it for are the hitch items-spring bars, sway bars etc. the battery will also be in there as well.

I am well below the ratings for tounge weight. I have a class 4 hitch on my truck-one of the benefits of getting the 7700 gvwr package. With weight distribution, I can go up to 1200 tounge weight.

I don't know where you got your numbers from but the empty tounge weight of my TT is 690 lbs. Loaded I am about 900 lbs. I loaded the front storage compartment heavy because my TT is built with a light tounge and has caused some handling issues in the past.

I got the tongue weight from Jayco-- based on the OP's trailer (19BH). Not your 29FBS.
The specs I got are on his Mountaineer-- not a 1/2 ton pick-up.

No worries.... it's nice to have someone around that can work the numbers to help (especially newbies when they join) with towing safely. If you go to just about any other rv forum, you will find about five guys answering a gvwr/cgvwr question LOL.

Jes' wunderin'... we will be back home in another week or so. I have all the numbers there (we had tt/tv/tongue loaded and weighed) but still am concerned about our hitch/tongue weight. Can I send ya the info so next time your bored you can help us out? Thanks

I just want to use the box for hitch items and maybe a few other light weight things. For the most part the bulk of the weight in the box will be removed, because it will be attached to the vehicle to tow the trailer. The unfortunate thing about the 19bh, is the storage access from the outside is marginal at best. I will keep you all posted on my progress. Thanks for the advice JP.

Just finished the tool box install. It came out great. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics yet due to the weather here. The pics really would not have come out that good. As of now, I have my battery in the tool box, spring bars, sway bars, x-chocks and a few tools for changing a tire. Other than that, I probably won't put much else in there. I had to move the propane bottles forward about 1 inch to get clearance. Pics will come as soon as I can get back to the trailer(stored at a secured location due to homeowners regs).

I only need a place to store my stabilizer bars for my Equal-i-zer so I'm using a PVC tube with a cemented end cap and a screw in front cap. The tube is attached to the tongue frame behind my battery box by U-bolts. I have built a frame on the Jayco 23FB rear bumper and have a tool box mounted there. It works great. Will try to get some pictures of the installations the next time I check on my trailer at the storage lot.

Got my tool box. Its a 70 inch full size truck box, but its only 12.5 inches deep. Found some square bottom u-bolts at my local hardware store. Now all I need is a nice day and a freed up calander.
