Under Bed Insulation

The first time we went camping in our new trailer it was well into the upper 90's. When we went to bed I was happy to have the 2nd A/C unit in the bedroom. The Thermometer I put in there said it was a chilly 65 degrees in the bedroom when we went to bed. But we were warm, too warm. The next night I put a thermal prob down into the pass through and while it was 65 degrees in our bedroom, it was 80 degrees in the pass through and the heat was rising up through the plywood and the mattress and warming us like a waterbed!

So this weekend I took a couple sheets of Foam insulation and applied them to the bottom of the bed, the sides of the under bed storage and under sideboards. In doing so I found a couple of good sized holes where I'm sure warm air (and who knows what else) could pass through. That's all plugged now. Hopefully this will help. We'll find out soon enough.

Big Hole

Hole Fixed!!

I did this in my rear storage compartment below the rear bunks. I found the temps were dipping down too low at night to keep my baby girl warm all by herself back there. Our baby monitor has a digital thermometer readout and after the mod was complete we figure it kept the bunk area about 4*C warmer than before. I'm sure it helps with the heat as well. I have some leftover insulation so I might do our front as well. Looks like you did a good job on yours. Once my insulating was complete I covered everything with mahogany subflooring (luan) to protect it and make it look a little more finished.

Yeah, I'm hoping the "Tinfoil" backing will protect it from stuff under the bed. I may go back and glue some luan plywood over it if I notice it's getting bang up.

I also forgot to mention that using a can of low expansion spray foam insulation also helped seal up some seams with small gaps. You will likely end up wanting to use the luan, from my experience anyways. My insulation got a couple gouges in it from just one trip without it. It also allows you to use some screw in hooks and stuff to better organize your gear.

Our unit also has a separation wall under the bed from the pass through. This also helps a lot from fluctuations in temperature. We also put a soft foam along the night stands and bed to help with those gaps.

Yeah our former trailer had that wall and I suspect that's why it never was an issue before. I had considered building a wall to separate them but realized we sort of like the big space, makes it easier to get things in there.

Here`s what I did several years ago. Insulated the partition with foam block then finished it off with luan. Also insulated under the bed plywood with foam block.

Trust me, it does not look like that now.

Yeah, I need to do something like that! I know the wife would be happier if every little thing had it's own place instead of being "In there somewhere".

That is exactly what we did with our new Eagle. My wife freaked out a little when she realized the storage area was open to the bedroom. I cut out very thick cardboard and it worked great. I will try and upgrade to the foam board when it cools off a little.
