Wasted space above microwave

Long time lurker, first time posting.

I've been thinking about this for awhile, but credit BigJohnD for actually giving me the initiative to do it. I didn't have the materials but $5.96 at a local Lowes fixed that, and...voila!

Lotsa "free" space and makes me wonder why it isn't done at the factory...???

Looks good, nice to have a little more storage space. Was the panel that you removed just stapled in place or did you need to cut it out?

You can just push it in with your fingers it's almost that easy. There are just short staples holding it in.

Did this same thing the day I brought mine home. Great mod and the perfect place to keep bread.

In my case the electrical outlet was below the counter top in a blank space so I removed that panel and located the outlet just to the left of that blank space and made a silverware drawer to fill that 13" wide blank cavity.

That's good to know, thanks.

I've always wondered about that; I have some similar spaces. What if you found some critical stuff in there and wanted to replace the panel to where it was. Can I assume that would be a bit more difficult?

In my example, I merely removed the microwave and could see there was nuthin in the way.

What materials did you need to purchase ? Looks like all you have to do is remove the panel?

Went to my local big box and got a square of luan (for the actual shelf), some wood to support the shelf, and I already had the wood screws. And you are correct as to removing the panel. Do remove the microwave (its only four screws) to let you have room to work. This took me 90 min from start to finish.

Didn't realize it didn't already have a floor in it... Thanks
