2006 Jayco Feather Sport Roof Project

First post to the forum and unfortunately it is due to extensive water damage. Me and my wife bought the camper back before Christmas not realizing that water had made its way throughout the camper, focusing on the interior and exterior roof. Selling was not an option and paying someone twice what we paid for it to repair was out as well. I began the process of repairing three weekends ago and currently have around 24 hours thus far invested. Never done this type of work, with that being said any help is greatly appreciate. Cheers

Welcome to the forum. Well that is quite the project you have on your hands, sorry you have to deal with this problem. Thanks for the pictures, they show real well how you are coming along. I'm sure other members will chime in here soon that will have great advice. I'm just a novice as far as mods go so I wouldn't know where to start with a major project like yours. Keep us posted on your progress though, I hope it goes smoothly for you.

looks like i will have to remove the upper frame to get access to the entire project. My first thought is to buy materials from Lowes and mimic the factory hardware... i assume if there is a direct factory replacement the cost is pretty high. Has anyone had experience with this?

Cheers,

A.B.

There are a couple of good threads on here where others have done similar work. The two I recall have good pictures too. When you need a break from the work, try a quick search here.

It looks like you have the fully flat roof, you might consider replacing it with one with just a bit of crown to it. Don't replace what you have with the same problem; with all the work you're doing put in a wee bit more and make it better! Look at how Jayco and others make theirs with about 1.5" of peak. The flat roofs are pretty susceptible to leaking around the A/C as the weight can sag the roof a bit and cause water to pool there.

Being a glass half-full kind of guy, I would attack this with relish as I would really feel I would know my TT inside and out when done. Looks like you have a great high and dry place to work on it. Great advantage! Good luck, and welcome to JOF!

Made some more progress today, found out the hard way that the entire frame needed to come out, I had to go back and evaluate my next move. The frame itself seems rather flimsy and that I do not like. I am going to add a few cross sections of 1.5" square tubing for extra stability once I get the frame clean and ready for materials to go back in place.

I wanted to update the post as to where I am at currently . I have spent the last few saturdays cleaning the frame, prepping the camper and gathering materials. I took a few days off work to get this completed for Easter weekend. I modified the frame with extra support from 2x4 and went back with 1/8" plywood and 1.5" foam for insulation. Tomorrow my plans are to get the roof decking on and get the TPO glued down. On the interior I used FRP for the ceiling... that's where I am at currently....

I have to replace the front five feet or so of my trailers roof, as it has leaked around the antenna hole. Seems a little daunting but will do it step by step. Once I start taking the roof off will post some pictures to facilitate some help. Never done this before so am not sure how a RV roof is actually made and the different layers of material.

Update through this evening.....I got the TPO glued down and the rails back on. This was definitely a two person job. I went back with the Dicor Diflex II and ordered the whole kit. I will have some material left over which my local dealer is going to buy back for store credit which works out pretty good as I have a few minor things left to get. I'm happy with the results thus far, especially since this is the first and hopefully last time I have ever done this. Tomorrow after work I will start back up top with vents, air conditioner, front termination and start the sealing process...

Cheers,

Adam

Got most everything installed up top and sealed, I have two front rails left to attach hopefully Saturday. After that I have a few things left internally to install, I plan on going back with LED puck lights in the cabin, Bluetooth the stereo unit and some minor painting and touch ups.

Cheers,
AB

Response to Last Saint

I have a 2006 Jayco 165, same model as yours.
I am still waiting for the rain to stop for i can continue my roof replacement.
Unfortunately my tarp leaked further adding to the water damage. I am still deciding if I will do the complete roof or just half. If I do half then i would have make a mid roof seam which most likely be over my ability.

I would go ahead and replace the entire roof if you have significant water damage. I have never done this before either, it is indeed time consuming and you'll need an extra set of hands from time to time. The way it is constructed I think you'll have a difficult time replacing just a portion of the roof. If I can help please let me know.........

Took the camper out this weekend which was the first time after the roof replacement. Everything is great so far, supposed to get some heavy rain tomorrow so I will check again for any leaks I may have.
