Does size matter?

So, we're planning our 1st big summer trip in our 185RB, probably through Idaho, Utah, Grand Canyon, and up the Calif-Ore coast back home to Washington.
We are going to be using the RV parks with full H/U's the whole time and my question is, when we roll into some of the big parks, are all you guys with the big 5th wheels and luxury Motorhome's going to point at us and laugh? Just wondering. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I don't think trailer size matters. Its more about it being maintained and looking nice.

I`ve parked my $15,000 trailer next to $200,000 Class A`s before, never been a problem and was always treated with respect.

You run into a few shallow people everywhere, but for the most part you will find commonality and community.

We would get a lot of double-takes and slack jaws rolling up in a mid-size passenger car TV...usually leading to a friendly conversation.

On the other hand - I've had a few laughs at the expense of big riggers and MH'ers who obviously bit off more than they could chew....

If they are laughing at you they are not worth knowing...most people are easy to talk with and happy to have some company when traveling. I have my trailer parked at a trailer park that sees lots of big and small unit travelers as it is on the main hwy across Canada, I met lots of very friendly people this summer at the camp ground from all over North America.

+1 We've been to parks where we owned one of the most "sensibly priced" units in the entire park, and no one even batted an eye. In fact, one couple even walked over and asked about our LED strip under our awning!

Yes, size does matter. If your TT is longer than the site your on, you need a bigger site. After that, I can't think of any reason that it would.

We visited the Grand Canyon a few years ago from Ohio and stayed in a tent. We had a TT parked at home, but for several reasons traveled by car and stayed in a tent for almost 3 weeks. We had a great time. Also, we used to have a MH but traded it in because we like a hybrid (X23b) better. We're still having a great time.

We hope you have a great time too, in whatever vehicle(s) you choose to bring on the trip. A big expensive MH does not guarantee a better trip - although they are comfortable.

It all depends on the people you meet. Some will be in their cocoon and some are chatters and will make easy contact. And some feel superior. Some people are full timers and the large unit is all they have. I surround me around the general public and be helpful where I can with my experience.
My experience:
Late 60's tenting in Europe.....lots of fun; 70's and 80's 24 ft. tandem axle trailer pretty general around families in weekend trips. Early 90's being stationed in Europe lots of motorcycle camping with motor cycle groups...which was a lot of fun. Back in Canada brought a Fiesta Diesel and bought a Taurus Cadet 13 ft Fiberglass (made in Poland) I never had so many people talking to me while camping. Late 90's went to a 33 ft. 5er with Dodge Ram cummings 2wd and went for a while full timing. I did envy the people in smaller TT's and the motor cycle campers with tents. We found contact with others was a lot less except for places where we stayed longer than a couple of months. This did change somewhat in the millennium because more larger units where sold to the general public and also a lot more diesel pushers on the road. This year we down sized to a 23 ft. but might go to a 27 ft. for weekly travel trips and like a walk around queen better.


When starting a family it is expensive and for many they start from the bottom to slowly go upwards in size. There is some classification but in general it depends on yourself to. If you are a friendly and like to chat to your fellow campers you always will find an entry point. Camping is very amusing at times just like sitting in a mall.
Special when people are backing up in their site. Isn't always the fault of their partner.........Then you have newbies who have to much pressure on the ball to unlatch..........there comes that big hammer we 'all have seen that.......and the list goes on. It is always a great entry to meet some new people

When I owned a tent trailer and I ended up near a big luxury motorhome, I always thought I was smarter because we were both in the same place and it cost me a whole lot less.

If I get the cold shoulder I just waite till they bring little Fluffy out for a walk and they just scatter like flies! Tunce wouldn't bother them but they don't waite around to find out. I'm more than happy to help anyone any hour of the day or night and I carry extra tools and parts for plumbing and electric just in case.

No matter what size rig we've had, we've always associated with everybody, no matter what they were in. Sometimes that guy in the popup knows more than that guy in the bus, and the other way around. I've been helped by others with small rigs, and I've helped people with larger busses. I will tell you, I feel more comfortable in the rig we're in now. Having the class A was very nice, but I noticed in some areas, the people with towables didn't associate with us as much.

My wife and I toured to Whitehorse, Yukon in 2013 and to Yellowknife, NWT this past summer. We pretty much had the smallest TT in most of the CGs we stayed in.

We fulltime in a Seismic with a family of six. I look at some of those smaller units and think: "the places I could go with that!" I like the unit we have, but small and nimble can count for a lot. As long as it's fun, it's good. See you down the road.

We started camping in a tent, then moved up to a popup, then to a truck slide in and now we just purchased a Jayco travel trailer and looking forward to spring. With that said, you have all types of people everywhere. I must say that campers are some of the most friendly and helpful folks I've ever met..

I always enjoy the folks pointing to my meek Ford Ranger 4x4 pulling our hybrid at the campsites. It starts a conversation, and we make new friends!

One of our first outings in the X23B was to a nice KOA park that was just teeming with large TT's, 5th's and MH's. There was a Casita but he left the next morning and I noted we were then the smallest in the park. In the mornings I felt like a field mouse that woke up to find himself in a herd of buffalo.

I think nearly all started smaller or cheaper. God bless that person if their first setup was a diesel pusher, however we've found even with our first 23' TT and a Toyota Tacoma TV that nearly all are friendly and supportive. Just like in society there will be a few unfriendlies and idiots no matter where you go.
