Gravity Fill Water Leak

Maybe someone can help me out and tell me if I'm doing something wrong. We filled out water tank in the Whitehawk 33bhbs today to sanitize it. When I pulled the hose out, water spit back out at me with some force and nothing ever came out of the overflow. When I came inside I found water leaked underneath the sink and was coming out from underneath the drawers. After toweling it up and running fans, etc to dry it, we drained the water an refilled it. This time my wife kept the hose running a distance from the fill location but every once in a while we could hear it really start to gurgle and we would pull the hose back and then you would hear a huge rush of air and some water would spit back. When ever this happened a small amount of water would leak inside from where the tank hose is connected to the fill location. Eventually we just kept pulling the hose out every minute or so to avoid the air purge and leak. However once we go the tank full, water came back out of the fill point and nothing came out from the overflow! I had a 3/4 inch clear tube attached to my hose to fill the tank, so there was room around the hose in the fill point for air to get in. Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions????

Your vent/overflow is pinched or plugged so your tank builds up pressure.

This is the best thing you can get for filling your fresh water tank.

Yikes !! $26.99 !!! Should be $5 tops. I noticed alot of state parts we go to don't even have an end that would screw on to it making it useless for us anyway.

Mets721,

I didn't have that problem when I filled/sanitized my tank last fall. my overflow worked with no problem too.

It wouldn't suprise me if the overflow is pinched as 351rlts mentions. When I was winterizing last fall I noticed a 110 V romex wire weged between some plywood and the outside wall under the kitchen cabinet. I can just imagine the insulation getting rubbed through after a few thousand miles.

Get to know your trailer and check everything! Just to be safe.

I'm sure interested in why you are having this problem though, especially since it is spitting back at you.

I don't think this attachment will help your problem. As others have said, it sounds as if your overflow tube may be pinched or not working. And you can't count on your normal vent either, because when Jayco trailers have an overflow tube, they often never even connect a standard vent tube, figuring the overflow will also serve the vent purpose.

You will need to find the blockage or you may do serious damage to your FW tank. That plastic can inflate like a balloon if the air in your tank has no place to escape as you add water. Especially if your hose is pumping water in at a fairly strong velocity/pressure.

Water Bandit or Water Thief will help with the state park fittings.

Perhaps the inlet hose to the tank needs to be tighter. Even if the vent tube isn't working you should not have a leak in the trailer. If it is not venting enough it will build up a small amount of pressure and spit back out the fill pipe. Try filling your tank slower.

They have those fittings on the supply pipe because the water system there cannot handle the load that RV's put on it..

You don't mention the model year of you Whitehawk. If it's still under warranty, I'd sure contact your dealer for an inspection. Neither the spitting, nor the leaking should occur.

I found a labeled RV fresh water fill station in CA that had no threads. Had I not had a water bandit I would have been SOL.

Well, I called my dealer and spoke to the service department. I was told that there is a small, circular, relief screen at the 11o'clock position when you look at the fill. He told me to blow compressed air into it because it may have become blocked and that will definitely cause the gurgling and spitting because air cannot escape. Compressed air will apparently blow the blockage, probably a small amount of water, back into the tank. Well I checked that screen and it's blocked alright....it's not even hooked up to the tank. There's no tube connected to the back of it, instead it has a hard plastic plug attached to it. I have a 2014 Whitehawk 33bhbs, does anybody else have a gravity fill without this relief valve connected? The attached picture shows the rear of the fill and you can see the unattached relief in the 1 o'clock position.

I see in your profile that you have a 2014. I'd definitely take it back to dealer for warranty repair. As I mentioned in my previous answer to your OP, it is apparently not uncommon for Jayco to not hook up the normal vent when they have overflow tubes that can serve the purpose of venting air. (mine is not hooked up either, but the overflow tubes also vent the air) It sounds as if your overflow tubes may be blocked as well. Definitely need to have it looked at or you may damage your FW tank.
