How do you know when your slides are all the way out/in?

In our Whitehawk 33BHBS, it's hard to tell when to stop pushing the button for the main slide. It seems just when I hear the change in the sound of the slide motor, the mechanisim makes a loud popping sound like the gears are slipping. I'm trying to look for a spot on the floor to tell when I'm at the end of the in/out travel, but it seems like I shouldn't get a loud sound each time. I want to get good compression on the seals but I also don't want to damage the mechanism.

Does anyone else out there, with a whitehawk or other Jayco with slides, have the same issue?

Any other advise on slideology from the experts?

Thanks

Tim

When we did our PDI with our HTT, the dealer told us to run the slide in until it makes the popping sound. They said that noise is normal and that it will not cause any damage. I do not recall what dealer called it, but it is some type of clutch slipping, to prevent damage.

Jagiven,

Thanks for the reply. That is good to know. It sound pretty nasty when that popping happens so I'm glad to know it is a clutch and not the gears grinding.

That's exactly what our dealer said. But I agree, it's definitely a gnarly sound! I would think as long as you don't continue to hold down the switch just to hear the noise, you should be fine so long as the seals are getting seated nice and tight.

Dunno, but on our WhiteHawk 27DSRL or on our previous fifth wheel for that matter, the slideouts simply stop when they reach the limit of motion, in or out. They all make 'sounds', but I simply watch their movement.

Tim,
Our dealer instructed us to hold the button(s) down for 5 seconds after the slides came in. They stated that allowed the motors to get on track with each other. They said this was very important for the rear bedroom slide of the Whitehawk 33BHBS. Not sure if there is much if any truth to that but that's what we have been doing since Labor Day weekend when we took our rig out for a weekend trip and the bedroom slide did get off "track" somehow.

Exactly what we were told too...

Mine also makes the ratcheting sound when it is fully extended. It only does it when it is full out, not when you bring it back it. When I bring it back in it just stops and I hear the motor trying to bring it in further. From reading other posts, I think it is normal to hear the popping sound. I just let go as soon as I can when I hear it.

Very true for the Schwinteck in wall slide system. (I heard 3 sec) If you start and stop part way in or out you can throw them out of sync as well.

The Greyhawk manual states:
To move the room out, press the OUT section of the switch and hold it until the motor stops (travel time is approx. 25 seconds). Operating the switch after the room is fully extended will damage the switch and motor.

Same here. Hold the button until you hear the popping sound then stop. Do the same taking the slide out and back in. Our previous TT (FR Rockwood 8272S) had a slide and it did the same thing.
