it isn't burning all the fuel and needs to be serviced very soon.

Wow, Hopefully that is just dirt but that looks like a carbon buildup from using propane to heat (if possible), that or something is burning. That raises a good question, how do the Atwood heaters vent when heating with propane? I've only used the electric heater thus far.

unsure of your ability....a few bolts and it should come right out.
I personally haven't done it but wouldn't hesitate if I had to but that's the way I am.
If you are uncomfortable about taking stuff apart I would take it in
just google it

I had bugs take up residency in ours. Took metal vent out used metal door screen using 1/8" rivets to hold in place. Now it makes it more difficult with the "No Vacancy" screen in place for the bugs to camp out.

It is soot from a too rich mixture of propane. IF your not comfortable adjusting it take it to a dealer it is a simple adjustment and should not cost you too much.

CamCo sells screens for most of the external ports that a bug can get into.
I found a couple on Amazon.

I, too, have no problem taking things apart. It's just the getting them back together thing that causes all the issues.
So that smoke on the exterior was caused by bugs? We had been told about mud dauber screens, which are supposed to help with these types of issues but were also told that we don't have to worry about the bugs here in Southern California. Does anyone know if that is so?

It is not caused from bugs.. bugs impede the propane flow this is too rich a flow..

bugs can fill up the burner tube blocking air from entering. Creating a rich mixture. The OP found lots of bugs and cleaned it out. It has been a couple of days maybe he will confirm if it repaired it and if he now has a nice blue flame

I have no clue if SoCal has mud daubers, but spiders and other bugs can cause the same issue.
I would recommend poking around and looking for signs of an issue. If you see any carbon build up, you at least know where to start.

Not always. I had a spidey web built into mine once and didn't know it. First use in that spring, same issue, flamed/smoked up the side. Cleaned it out, problem solved. Every year now I take an air hose and blow it out before using it.

Same thing can happen to the furnace. My uncle warned me about this (he learned the hard way) and we got the screens before leaving the dealer for both TT's.
