Tongue weight is 10 to 15% of total weight, so ideally about 13%. 13% of 3200 is about 286lbs. The hitch weight on the website is 295 lbs. That would leave 2905 lbs on the tires/axles on a fully loaded trailer. They do seem to be cutting things really close on these liteweight trailers if the tires are only rated 1350 lbs each.

I've been reading up on tires ... the rating on the tire is for a certain PSI, say 50 (too dark to go look right now). But with more psi, heavier loads can be carried, up to a point. I'll have to look into it more.

They can only be inflated to the maximum pressure on the sidewall which likely coincides with the rating of the tire. -Lee

Here's my response from Jayco. I don't like it too much...

Our apologies for not getting back to you sooner. We were waiting for clarification on this information. Here's what we have: The actual axle rating is 2720 pounds and the combined tire capacity is 2720 pounds, 1360 pounds each. The Hitch rating is 500 pounds for a total capacity of 3200 pounds. The advertised GVWR IS 2480. We are providing 720 pounds caring capacity. As the unit is loaded, the weight typically spreads out between the tires axles and hitch. The SLX series is a small compact series designed and built specifically for smaller tow vehicles and a comfortable amount of personal items. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!
So the 3200 gvwr is dependent on having 500 pounds of tongue weight which isn't likely to happen in my case

Load carefully, buy light stuff, don`t haul much water and you should be fine. These ultralights have very small CCC`s on them by nature. I see where you are coming from, a few more hundred pounds on the axle and tires rating would be nice. They are making these as light as possible to bring more smaller tow vehicles into the mix so some who could not tow one before now can. On the plus side you`ll have a real light trailer behind ya! Some folks with ultralights use pickup trucks for TV`s just so they can put some weight in the truck and not the trailer. Probably not a lot of storage space in that sized unit either, another reason to keep stuff in the truck.

That makes no sense. They are going after smaller vehicle with a 3500lb hitch, rated for 350lb tounge weight. 500 lb on the tounge jumps to a 5k receiver. There is something wrong with this indeed.

I just think the rating is a little -- misleading. Nobody is going to have 500 lbs on the tongue of that thing. Call it a 3000lb cargo capacity, or something closer to reality.

Can you take it to a scale? Empty it out to factory weight, weight the full trailer unhitched, then just the trailer wheels, and you can have all your weights then? I hear people here can weigh them at the dump if its its not busy.

I sent jayco another email on this too. Their response to me i think was for another model of trailers.

subtract tongue weight from the trailer weight.. and never count people in the trailer because you dont ever drive down the highway with people in the RV.. when your in the cg you have the stabilizers down and the tongue jack down too both taking some of the weight.

500lb on the tongue is not for a <3500lb trailer, since it will be over the limit for a 3500lb rated hitch. The Jay Flight Swift SLX models are under 3500lbs and being marketed for the minivans and smaller SUV's. If they are relying on that much on the hitch, then they cant market it for these types of vehicles.

I think there is some confusion going on somewhere. I sent another email to Jayco for some clarification, since the info I got conflicts with info that others received in email, which conflicts with the units people are getting.

Im pretty sure Jayco did its homework and not putting 500lb on the hitch for a trailer around the 3000lb mark. At least i really really hope so!

I just read this post which is disturbing since I just put down a deposit on the 15BH model. My specs say 15" radial tires and galvanized wheel well. I wonder if that is a replacement tire and recently put onto the newer models because of that problem. The booklet that I got said 13" but a newer leaflet states 15" radial. I am going to ask the dealer about that!

Where did you see the info for 15"? Is it a dealer thing, or Jayco papers? Can you take a pic/scan or give a link? 15" tires would solve all the problems matched with the right axle.

I will try to attach a photo of the sheet. It is an 8 x 11 sheet from Alb any RV which is part of RVOne.com. On the website it still has the 13" wheels listed but this sheet says 15". I have sent an email to the salesman asking him about it but probably not there todayl.

The sheet says The All-New Swift SLX by Jayco"
Light weight and easty to tow
AC & Microwave
Ball bearing drawer glides
galvanized sheel wells
15" upgraded radial tires
2 year Jayco brand warranty

Then it has all three floorplans and the prices.

If this does not work, I could fax it to you tomorrow if you have a fax number.

I think etothepii has pretty much established that the tires are 13" based on the 1360lb rating each and the axle is rated 2720 lbs according to the Jayco email

I checked with the dealer and he said "the sheet is incorrect" and the wheels are 13"....so I guess I will cancel my order.

Sorry for misleading you but I believed the written word!!
