LED Light Replacement Question.

I recently bough all new LED bulbs (flat panel). They cell with a 2 sided tape to attach them to the base of the light. The LED lights got hot enough that they reduced the effectiveness of the strip of 2 sided tape. I replaced 10 lights in total and 7 of them have fallen because of tape failure. For the time being, I have replaced the old bulbs back until I can find a more permanent solution.

Is it better to go back with some better/stronger 2 sided tape, or maybe get a small tube of silicone caulk.

Surely I can't be the only one. To have this issue.

Thanks,

X

I too replaced my bulbs last year with LED's but mine give off little to no heat. I did find that two or three did fall off but I think that was due to me not cleaning the surface that the tape was sticking too. So I just put a drop off silicone sealant on the tape itself (used an alcohol wipe to clean the surface first though) and stuck them back on. They have held up so far but we will see if any let go after the winter deep freeze. Ryan

I think we have the same panels (48SMD)....my double-sided tape was marked 3M Brand....after a full year, not a single failure. Same thing with my 3M Comand Hooks in my TT....I've had (3) installed for (2) years without a failure. (1) Command Hook has been holding a metal shower caddy on textured panel board.

When using 3M tape I clean the area with alcohol and dry it - then apply pressure to the bonding parts for at least 30 seconds.

2X for cleaning with alcohol. I installed the flat panel kind in our old X23B and had one (out of a dozen or so) let go. Pushed it back in place and it lasted another year - then we sold the TT.

BTW...Use DENATURED Alcohol....not Rubbing Alcohol. Rubbing Alcohol has mineral oil as an ingredient.

These are all great tips.

I also seem to recall that even though the tape on the panels says "3m", it was a lower quality tape or not actually 3m brand. I've heard that people who had this problem went and bought "real" 3m 2-sided tape to replace the stuff that came with the light and that solved the problem.

I'm going to install some of these panels in my rig, just have to wait for the "opportune" time to buy them under DW's watchful eye.

lol...I know the feeling! My DW didn't see the need to buy LEDs...but it was easier to ask for forgivness than permission.

LOL! Last time LEDs showed up in my mail box, DW said "NO MORE LEDs! You've gone to the LED crazy!" That was my last grant of forgiveness for a while...

Can't really blame her though. Even if it's not a lot of money, I've been through 4 iterations of different bulbs and I'm still not totally satisfied with what I have!

I get away with it by explaining how long they will last and how much less HEAT they will introduce into the TT

I lucked out, my DW trusts me wit my decision on the LEDs.....$360.00 worth later. I bought mine thru a RV repair shop and mine are the 18 led flat panel with a spacer and screw. They are designed to replace the 921 and so far the ones that I have installed fit nice and snug without the screw mount modifications. They are a white light and man, the 6 I have installed so far...it is so much brighter....can't wait til I am finished....just have to wait for this weather to dry up. It was either been raining, snowing, windy, sleeting..I just want it to be dry for day on the weekend so I can open the bed slide to access 6 of the lights

I installed the 48 LED boards. I had a number of the foam bases shrivel up and fail. I went to the one of the labs at work and picked up some double face thermally conductive tape (3M product I think #8805??). I put it on two lays thick and it has held quite well.

I bought LED replacements at quartzsite a month ago. Straight fit into the 921 socket. No tape or screws. 330 lumens warm white. No heat issues. So far very happy.

I'll be going to pick up my camper for the dealership this week. I should also be getting my new solar array, and new LED bulbs in the mail in the next couple of days.

I'll have to install the new Max Air vents, add a couple new outlets (one 12v and 1 AC). I also want to permanently wire up a quick connect for the solar array. After than, I'm ready for camp season 14!

What kind of money did you pay for these. What you have is what I want to do.

The lights were 15.00 each with lower prices for quantities 6 and above. The vendor was EEZRV Poducts. They had a tent selling them and also will ship. eezrvproducts.com

Hey X, I have the 48 SMD Warm White LED Light Panels, and the fake 3M tape scorched/shrivelled up and disappeared in some cases. I have since bought true 3M tape and so far so good. If it happens again I plan to use high temp silicone product next.
