Opinions on carrying an extra TV spare....
Hey folks!
We got back last month after a 3 week cross-country trip and, after a miserable TV blowout on the freeway in 98-degree heat (with no drivers seemingly willing to slow down/pull over into the other lane when passing us--sheesh) I've decided I *really* want to carry an accessible full-size spare (our minivan just carries a doughnut, and the space allocated under the rear bumper won't take a full-size, or so I'm told). I don't like the idea of keeping it either in the back of the van or inside the trailer (untidy, too much in the way).
Here's my question: I was looking at the tongue of our trailer (a Swift SLX 154), and it looks like there'd be space under the tongue, just beneath the battery bracket, to strap a spare.
Does this sound doable? The way our trailer loads, I think we need more tongue weight, anyway. The other option would be to mount a second bracket on the TT bumper and put the spare there, but then that puts more weight behind the axle....
Anybody got any experience with this?

BTCohosh--If you have a roof rack, that would work.Just as an fyi I don't think the "doughnut" has a tow rating . Even if it's untidy you should have a full size spare. Bag it carry in the tt, put it under the tt at the cg.You might want to ask the dealer of your tv what kind of spare is supplied with a tow package a where it is stored. Larry

Larry,
Good point....., it may handle the weight of the TV for a short distance at a reduced speed, but while towing is a different ball game altogether. Never thought about before, then again all of my TV's have always had full size wheels/tires.

Thanks guys. We were lucky when we blew out--just a couple of miles from an exit with a tire shop.
Any opinions on an under-hitch vs back bumper mount?

How about mounting the spare on a jeep bracket mounted to the tongue? You'd have to meassure one up as I'm just thinking out loud and don't know that it'll fit. It is something I'd be interested in as my parents are in the market for a minivan.

Full size vans usually have a full size spare on a bracket mounted on one of the rear doors. Maybe that would be an option for you.

See if you can get a carrier that mounts under the trailer. All of our trailers have had an under the frame mounted spare. I personaly don't like the rear bumper mounts as the tires seem to move and vibrate a lot causing welds to fail.

My Keystone had the spare mounted that way.. just make sure you measure (several times) for clearance under the tire... also make sure your tongue weight does not go over what your hitch can handle.

btcohosh--Our 19H has a" under tongue" spare tire mount. You could have one made, don't know about your tongue weight and your tv's specs, you'll have to check that out.Larry

That is one of the changes when you order a vehicle with a factory tow package, you will always get a full size spare. If you put on an aftermarket hitch this is something you should consider. Sorry about your blowout but you were lucky. another option is Good Sam road service.
