Probably a dumb question, but.........

Greetings JOF friends.......I have read a lot of discussions on this forum regarding the use of the TT's furnace. I will be running mine in a couple of weeks as my family is going on one last excursion to Northern Michigan, and it will be rather chilly; (downright cold for you Southern folks, and mild to you folks from Northern Canada!!). I turned on the furnace today as many of you experts have said it gives off a bad smell the first couple of times it's used. My question is: Is that smell dangerous to breathe, or is it just an inconvenience? I'd hate to subject my family to something potentially dangerous, and although our TT is equipped w/ a CO detector, I don't exactly trust their accuracy. In today's test run, I could smell that unpleasant odor you all have warned me about. Thank you for the input. Happy Camping!!

What you smell is akin to burning oil. When new, the burner has a thin coating of oil on it from the manufacturing process. Once this has burned off, the smell is gone. Myself, I have no worries about any ill effects of the smell.

There should be little or no smell after the first use. We camped in ours the night we picked it up and it snowed, so we used the furnace. I cannot remember it being an issue, and my wife is very sensitive to odors.

Mine was really stinky the first time it was used. This was during the delivery process to make sure it was working properly. We just left the door and windows open. No odor since.

Mine stunk, but stunk in the same way my heater in the house smells on the first run after summer.
It also set off the smoke detector, which alarmed me at first.
All was fine after 30 minutes running with all the windows and doors open.

Many with sinus problems can be irritated by the smells from the first burn or the first one after the unit sits awhile. We try to run it with the windows open for a few minutes. Be aware that it can set off the smoke detector, just like bacon or dog pharts! LOL

My wife tends to be on the sensitive side when it comes to running the heater in our home for the first time after the summer. So usually what we do is she'll take the dog for a walk and I'll open all the windows in the house and let the heater burn off whatever it is that needs burning off. By the time she comes back, all's well.

Now what I want to know is what kind of dog Norty1 has that can set off the smoke detector! What do you feed 'em?

Anybody remember "Snot" from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation? "Before we left he drank a half quart of Pennzoil. When he lifted his leg the next morning. . . whoa!"
