That's how BJ's works around here.. They actually measure what you get and only charge for what you get.
Most other places around here charge a flat rate to fill a tank. So if you have a tank that's not completely empty, you pay the same as if it was completely empty, making a top off, a rip off!

The $1.79 is per GALLON not per pound. Every place I have dispensed propane now charge by the gallon, and only for the actual gallons dispensed. Campgrounds charge more because they also pay more, and it costs them more to dispense it. Even at really busy campgrounds we normally only filled a few bottles (or tanks on MH) a day. This past spring in South Dakota we had 13" of snow on mothers day, I had one person in a class A wanted to fill his takes....took less than 2 gallons..not fund crawling around in the snow for a couple of dollar sale.

Our local hardware charge by the gallon. The price varies just like all fuel prices. They break it down to 1/10 of a gallon.

Dang. When I saw this thread I was going to post up about the great deal I was getting at the Hy-Vee grocery store -- $17. But you guys are blowing me away. I think I need to shop around.

It pays to ask the price and make sure they measure it by the gallon and not just charge a flat price.

Unless it is an emergency, they are ripping you off.
