Questions about towing SLX 195RB

Hi all,
We are just starting to look at trailers and trucks. We are considering a used Chevrolet Silverado with 6700 lb. towing capacity and a Jayco Flight SLX 195RB. I have seen the suggestion elsewhere that it might not tow well, that the trailer is longer than it should be for a single-axle. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Not sure why it would not be a good combination. What is the payload capacity of the chevy? gvw of the tt is 3500 pounds, with a 15 percent tongue weight of about 525 pounds.

Remember to calculate in your stuff you you wany to bting with you, such as passengers weights, hitch weight, topper and so forth. The manufacturer figures in a full tank of fuel and a 150 pound driver on their calculations.

I would purchase a good wdh, with integrated sway control.

Having towed a 195RB Baja 10k miles over the last two seasons with our RAM 1500 I can tell you from our experience that the 195RB tows very well. I had seen similar comments about the 195RB when we were looking, but after doing some additional research, specifically regarding the back of ball ratio (BOB for short) for the 195RB, I decided that it should be fine.

I don't really see much about the BOB. It pertains to the placement of axles related to the overall length of the trailer. Measure the distance from the coupler on the A-frame to the center of axle placement and divide that by the total length of the trailer from coupler to bumper. A value of 60% or higher is acceptable. Less than 60% can cause wandering and potentially unload hitch weight. The math for the 195RB produces a BOB ratio of 66% (172 inch wheel base / 260 inch overall length).

As with any trailer, care in loading and ensuring proper tongue weight is critical as is hitch adjustment. I run with an average tongue weight that is about 12% of loaded trailer weight (440lbs) and ensure that when hitched the front of the trailer is just slightly nose down.

Based on what you are describing I would think that things should be fine. Do the necessary payload estimates and verify that the Silverado will meet your needs in that respect.

We pull our 17 195RB with a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the base v6 engine.

So far we have driven from Illinois to Amish country ( also home town area of Jayco) and back through heavy traffic.

We also went from Illinois to Denver, then into to the mountains and over some high passes to Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, some other parks and back home. About 3800 miles all told.

Both trips were no problem with towing. No sway events with our Andersen hitch and other than 14 cruising and 8.6 MPG mountains, no problems with the engine and transmission. Never overheated or had a temp alarm on the tranny. No problems braking downhill.

I would recommend reading this forum thread I started. LOTS of good information on towing.

SilveradoSierra.com • Travel Trailer Recommendations : Towing/Trailers

On the first page is a link to let you punch in your VIN of the truck you are looking at too so you know what final gear ratio you have. I learned a lot in the last 2 months on this subject but still no expert...lol. Hope this helps.

Edit:
By the way my tow capacity is actually 9200 lbs from factory. Silverado 1500 5.3L V8. I had no idea what I was talking about at the beginning of that thread as you will see...

One word of advice from someone who has had the exact combination ..... write yourself a note and stick it on your dash as a reminder that you are pulling a trailer....u'll sometimes forget it's back there. A great combination. The 195RB pulls like a dream, and the Silverado 1/2 in any form will tow it nicely.

Wordgirl57, the towing capacity of that Silverado is a lot less important than its *payload* capacity. A travel trailer will put about 10-15% of its weight on the hitch, so that trailer will weigh in at up to 525 pounds. What's the max hitch weight of that Silverado? And what is its payload capacity? (You probably have to work this out from the stickers - GVWR minus curb weight). Payload includes fuel, passengers, luggage and other cargo, the trailer's hitch weight, and the hitch itself. And then there's the combined weight of the Silverado and the trailer when loaded - don't exceed the Silverado's GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating).

Be careful, and enjoy your trailer!!

Roger

Ended up with different truck

Thanks, all. We wound up with a 2013 Ford F150 5L v8, so we should be fine with that combination, from what I can deduce.

That should be great. I assume it has the factory towing package, so it will be almost perfect for your trailer. We just returned from a 500-mile round trip towing our 23RLSW with our 2010 F150. Towed just fine, and our trailer is a bit heavier than yours.

Now it's time to enjoy!!

Is the Explorer 2wd or 4wd? Engine size?
