Trailer brakes

Do you need a battery on the trailer for proper functioning of the electric brakes or do they operate off the battery of the tow vehicle through the 7 pin connector? Or both?
Thank you.

The trailer brakes operate with power from the tow vehicle through the 7 pin connector. The trailer emergency brake however relies on the trailer battery to operate, so a battery is a must.

The battery on the trailer operates the break away switch in the event your trailer separates from the TV and it applies the brakes.

In most states its required by law to have a battery for electric brakes. In most cases the law does not specifically state that the battery must be present, but wording such as "must be equipped with brakes adequate enough to stop the vehicle" are used implying that without the battery the trailer isn't adequately equipped in the event of an emergency.
