weight distribution hitch

i noticed the other day that my lift brackets seem to move a lot. Right now they are held in place by pressure. Can they be bolted on so that they dont come loose?

What brand hitch? If it's a chain type hitch your setup might be causing them to move when you make a tight turn. But that's a guess until you tell us what brand hitch.

How many lengths of chain do you have hanging free when hooked up? It should be 5 or less with 4 being better than 5.

If you get to close to solid (with only a few chain lengths under load) you don't have enough arc travel to make turns with the rig. That will push and pull on the brackets instead of just swinging the bars under the brackets. Overall setup of that hitch has to be followed to the letter of the instructions.

I would check the tightness of the set-screw on the snap-up bracket, it should only be tightened 1/4 to 1/2 turn maximum. If the snap-upbracket is bent, I would replace it. Also, the chain should hang vertical (not at an angle) when the spring bars are engaged and the TV/TT in a straight line, this allows for maximum spring bar movement during TV turns (as 'eldermike' mentioned). I assume that you have the round bar Eaz-Lift WDH, so make sure that you have it adjusted correctly so the bars are parallel to the TT A-frame.

I realize that the Eaz-Lift Elte instructions refer to chain links "hanging"...., but the chain link count "under tension" is important, these must be the same. I have heard of a couple conditions where two different lengths of chain were be supplied, which can confuse the link count results.

Most other WDH manufactures installation instructions reference their WDH chain link adjustments in terms of "links under tension", and normally state a 5-link minimum "under tension" to insure proper spring bar movement. I only mention this in the event that you incur any replies referencing "under tension".

Yeah, I thought it was strange that the instuctions for this WDH shows links hanging free and not ones under tension. But the idea is to have some freedom of movement or expect it to drag/push the brackets when turning a corner.

I have 0, none, links dangling. My entire chain is under tension on both sides. This adjustment occurred when I installed the Timbren SES kit on my F-250. I have a Reese 2.5 in. Titan shank with 1500lb springbars because of the 1400lb tongue weight on the rear end. My springbars are parallel with a slight down at the ends. This setup has returned my front end to within 1/4 in of normal. This seems to work well, with only minimal normal "creaking" from the hitch. I had to tilt the hitch head a little further back to get maximum tension. The Timbrens really took the sag I had before out of the equation.

The links have varied from 3 to 4 depending on how i load it and if I have anything in my truck bed. After reading this and looking at my set up i believe it is possible the dealer did not set it up right. I will play with it this spring and see if I can find a better set up. Thanks for the help.

Once spring rolls around feel free to post a couple of pics of your existing WDH set-up, and we can work with you in dialing in the adjustments.
