What is your opinion of this tow combo?

A couple of questions. What's the allowable tongue weight for the Cherokee?? Do you intend to use a weight distribution hitch and if so which one?

As important a weight ratings are I also look at length of the trailer versus wheelbase. This trailer is 27+' long. Your wheelbase is 114" general rule of thumb is 20' of trailer for 110" of wheelbase then an additional foot of trailer for each additional 4" of wheelbase. Thus a 21' trailer for this vehicle. A Propride hitch would address some of this but I would talk to the folks there. The reason this is important. Think of the trailer as a lever behind your vehicle. As you know a long lever vastly increases the amount of force from a similar amount of effort. I have a 24' Jayfeather on a Tnudra and can tell you I would not want to tow it with my Sequoia which had a longer wheelbase than the Cherokee. Just my 2 cents.

Trying to read that sideways and deciphering it are difficult but I believe those two are not compatible. I base this on several items (all rounded):

Your camper can weigh 5000 empty, 6000 pounds loaded.
You say the total the vehicle can carry is 1000 pounds.
You say yourself and equipment will be 400 pounds, leaving only 600# for the camper.

For safely towing a bumper/ rear frame pull you need a minimum of 10% of the camper weight on the hitch, ideally 15%. That by itself dictates a cargo load of 500-750 empty /600-900 pounds loaded just by itself.

Add that to the previous 400 people/equip pounds and you've reached/ exceeded the stated allowable 1000 pounds.

I could be misreading your numbers but I think I got it correct.

Looking at Jeep specs for your vehicle, it looks like a max trailer weight of 6200 pounds. While your trailer could weigh up to 5995 pounds, one must factor in the tongue weight on your payload of, you say 1050 but Jeep states 1180 to 1320. As Wrascal states, your tongue weight could be up to 900 pounds. That doesn't leave much in the way of cargo or passengers in the Cherokee.

It might work but not much wiggle room.

my 2 cents worth, your Jeep will tow this trailer. Remember that you seldom tow a trailer at its maximum weight, such as with full fresh, gray and black water tanks. Your Jeep is rated to tow 6200 lbs and the trailer is 4605 empty add 10% for the unknown and call the trailer weight 5000 lbs. Your 6 cylinder engine is rated at 216hp and 260lbs/ft torque. I will make 2 suggestions 1. Buy the Pro Pride hitch, $2500, I've never had trailer sway with it and my Bronco is a foot shorter then your Jeep. 2. Your current gear ratio is 3.45:1 which is good for highway gas mileage but not for towing. I would suggest at least 4.10:1, I run 4.56:1 and tow without a problem.

I agree with Mainenebula in that the camper is too long for the Jeeps wheelbase.

After three times out I can tell anyone who cares to listen, the Jeep Grand Cherokee just doesn't have it to pull the Jayco 23RLSW. The Husky weight distribution system worked flawlessly and on flat road the Jeep did fine. Hills were another story 4600 rpm in 3rd gear is not my idea of good performance.
Tomorrow evening I pick up the solution... 2014 Dodge Ram Sport with a 5.7 Hemi.

You will need to readjust your wdh, but once set up you should have a great combo!!!
