Lightbulb Where do you store your portable generators when traveling?

I just purchased a Yamaha Sine Pro 2000 watt generator. I discovered it's too tall to fit under the dinette seat in my 185BH Jayco Swift TT. My three large dogs ride in the back of the TV (Tacoma Pre-Runner) so there's not a lot of room in there. I need to secure the generator in the TT during transport. Where would you suggest? It weighs 44 lbs empty. I could store it in the dinette seat and leave the plywood cover off but it's awkward for me to reach to the middle section. The first section has an electrical box in the corner which is in the way. It could become damaged if I try to put the generator in the first section closest to the door.

I have been thinking about this as well since I have a new unused 185rb (first TT). I was thinking about placing my Honda 2000 in it's box and putting it in the tub with a couple of towels under it.

Thoughts?

When we used our Tahoe as the TV, on the few short trips i needed it, I carried my Honda generator inside the Trailer wedged between the couch and kitchen counter. It worked out each time, but I didn't like having it inside. I didn't carry extra fuel, only the fuel in the generators tank with the vent cap closed. Now it stays in the pick up bed locked up.

I don't have much cargo capacity, so I transport my EU2000is in Rubbermaid totes in the TV. They did ride in the PU before the Z.

My 2kW Honda is anchored to the rear corner of my truck bed. Then I have a locking hard folding top bed cover which keeps the generator completely out of sight except when I am using it. Then I just pull it out onto the tail gate. It is still tethered to the inside of the truck bed when running.

What would bother me keeping it inside my trailer is when it is not being used I would be afraid I would run off to do something and leave it unattended at the camp ground. My generator goes where I go sitting in the back of my truck...

Of course no place is really secure but at least doing it this way the generator is with me most of the time and is out-of-sight.

No way would I chain my generator to the trailer leg or frame and go off and leave it in plain view unattended. Just how safe you think this generator will be in this photo.

LOL, that is exactly what I do for hours on end...but even better yet, I prop it up on turned over milk crate to keep it out of the dirt. I haven't had any issues, not saying I won't, but I willing to risk that insurance claim. I'd be more upset if someone makes off with my beer cooler that also sits out in plain site, just with out a lock. :hihi:

I put mine in a green tub with a lid and put it in the bathroom floor of my 184.

I store our Honda 2000 in the tool/utility box in the back of the truck. It gets locked to something substantial whenever it is not in the truck. There is a flat spot in the lock cable where someone tried to cut it.

Mines in the bed of my truck when it isn't being used. I usually only use it a race tracks and then it is chained to my front a-frame where it lives for the extended weekend. It's sheer weight, the chain, and the fact that there is an entire stocked bar and several coolers of beer act as great deterrents.

I was thinking the same thing. Have 174bh. Towing w/SUV so it will need to go inside. I bought a cable w/lock to attach to something but now I am concerned someone will try to steal. I need to be able to keep plugged in and outside while keeping it secure at the same time. Any Ideas? I want to be able to leave camp spot without unhooking my generator. Love this site as everyone is so helpful.

I use my heavy duty tow chains to secure my Yamaha generator. The weakest link is my lock for sure, I'm not too worried, really a lock only keeps a good guy honest, a thief will destroy whatever barriers you try to put in place.

When traveling they go in the thru storage under the bed. I have to tip it sideways to get it in, but once inside it sits upright.

I carry my 2000i in the front storage compartment of my Eagle. It is sealed from the rest and vented thru the bottom. If I had a factory genny, that is where it would be installed.
In the attached pic, It sits on the ground near the rig while I was broke down for almost 24 hours in a rest area. I turned it off and stored it when I went to sleep.

My two Honda E2000i generators and extra gasoline are stored in separate tubs in the bed of my pickup.

My pickup has a cap on it to protect everything from growing legs and running away and for protection from the weather elements, particularly rain.

I also carry an air compressor in the bed of the pickup, along with any needed ramps, blocks, and my dump equipment which is in a separate tub that has a lid.

With my new 23RB, I anticipate moving all the ramps, blocks and dump equipment to the large storage compartment in the rear on the curbside.

Do you put your gen, gas, & compressor way up front in your truck bed? I have a 2011 F150 SCrew, 5.0, 6.5 bed w/ camper cap, pulling a 2010 Jay Flight 22FB. Just now setting it up for longer trips. Haven't been to scale yet, but trying my best to simulate travel loading before scaling. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Yep...
All of my heavy gear that is in the truck bed is as close to the cab as possible. I load from front to back, heaviest to lightest. The rear axle has enough to worry about. With my 150, the back half of my bed was basically empty. Will follow the same approach with my new one.

We've got a cap. The genny goes with us (Honda2000) if we leave camp the cap is locked and the windows dark.

When I had a F150 w/ 6.5' box, I put my air compressor far forward in the bed as possible. I use those temporary cement mixing black trays to keep stuff in. They are easy to slide around, and in the case of gasoline that might seep out on a hot day, it's contained within one of those tubs.

I usually have another tub with stuff I don't use often forward also.

I have a tub that I keep 2 generators in, and another tub that I keep the extended run tank plus 3 2.5 gal cans of gasoline. They are always in series, one or the other over the axles and the other at the very end.

I have one last tub that holds a large container that I kept my sewer stuff, like slinky stinky, etc. I like this tub and the gas and generator tubs close to the rear of the bed since I use them very often.

Good thing is, I will not put one tub of stuff, the sewer things plus ramps, blocks etc in the rear curbside storage bay on the 23RB. That's stuff I no longer have to keep in the bed of the truck.

I have a Stromberg Carlson Trailer Tray. I store my genset on the tongue of my RV over the propane tanks.
