15,000 BTU AC vs Yamaha 2400 inverter

I have a Yamaha 2400 inverter generator that I bought to charge batteries and occasionally run the 13,500 btu AC in my old trailer.

Earlier this week, I tried our New Jayco, 29.5 BHDS HT 15,000 btu AC and it wouldn't go. It would try, but would trip out the generator every time. Even with all the breakers off but the AC.

After doing some research, I read that my AC should have had a start capacitor from the factory. This didn't seem right. Yesterday I had a chance to get up on the roof and investigate. All I found was a run capacitor and a fan capacitor. So I found a place locally that sells the Supco SPP6 start capacitor and picked one up this morning for under $20.

Just got done installing it. Tested it on shore power to make sure it still worked and it did. Went out to the garage and got the Yamaha 2400 threw it in my truck, fired it up and drove up to the camper. Plugged it in, went inside and turned the fan on first, then flipped the air on with my fingers crossed (didn't flip any breakers to limit 120v usage). She started right up!! Didn't even really rev the engine in the generator up very much either. It's outside pouring away as I type this. Wanted to give it a workout and burn out the older gas (with additive in it).

Looks like we'll be sleeping comfortably if we encounter hot weather on the road on the way to or from Glacier!!

Was an easy install. Pull the shroud, pull the control cover, plug in two wires, secure the capacitor (zip tires) and put it all back together. Didn't get a picture of the installed capacitor though.

Makes a world of difference!!

It's rather hard for me to see the diagram, which color wires went to the start capacitor. Did they have end already on them or did you have to crimp some on? Glad you had success. I was wondering if that generator had what it takes to start the 15k.

If you click on the pictures, they should open bigger.

The SPP6 has female blade terminals attached to the two wires already. The run capacitor, the left one in the picture, has 4 male blades on each pole. The capacitor plugs into one of the free blades on each pole. I read somewhere that the lead with the piggyback connector (female blade with a male tab sticking off it) goes on the pole that has the red wire. That's what I did and was successful.

By comparing the wire diagram that is on the control cover and the wire colors, you can figure out what is what in there.

Only things I needed were a Philips screw driver and 2 zip ties.

Oh, we will need DETAILS on this mod, Sir! What is the capacitor that you added? Who was your supplier? Is it that intuitive as to where to plug it in?

This looks like a mod that many of us will be interested in....

Here is the Hard Start Capacitor:

Supco

One that page, you will see an orange button that says "find local distributor" or you can buy online, I know Amazon had them cheap. But in my case, fast and 2 miles from my house trumped cheap. Mine was $19 and some change.

IMPORTANT: you want the SPP6 (not the SPP6E)

The package tells you to place one wire with the yellow and the other with the red. I read somewhere that the capacitor lead with the male spade coming off the female connector should go to the red, so that's what I did. There will be multiple male spades on the run capacitor. Just use a free one, they are interconnected.

So once you open up the unit, it's pretty easy. There will be a metal cover that is held on buy a couple screws and the electronics are behind it. The back side of the cover should contain a wiring diagram. If you use the diagram and wire colors, you can determine what parts are what.

It's a simple job. Hardest part is taking the shroud off, and even that isn't that bad.

I had just pulled my manuals out to figure out how to lift the shroud.... It isn't very clear, so I guess that I need to get up on the roof....

On mine, there are 4 screws on the top towards each corner. That's it. Remove the 4 screws and then pull the shroud off.

Cdash, thanks for posting this and the clarification. Once I looked at it with my tablet it made all the difference. I didn't want to have to buy a larger generator if I was able to get by with a smaller one. There just doesn't seem to be as much info about running the larger 15k generators as there is with the 13.5k on these forums.

That's great info. I have been wondering for a long time if you could run the AC with less generator if you added a hard start capacitor. I'm thinking it might make things easier (better for your equipment) all around even if you have plenty of generator.

As 'Cdash' mentioned on most model A/C's there are 4 screws on top of the plastic shroud......, but depending on the manufacture of the A/C upon removing the 4 screws there may also be some metal clips along the frame base (sides & front) of the A/C. The bottom edge of the plastic shroud snaps over the metal clips...., you may have to help the plastic edge over the clips.

Important: When reinstalling the plastic shroud make sure it is properly seated "under the clips" before installing the 4 top screws. There have been cases where the front part of the plastic shroud sustained damage due to the wind lifting the shroud away from the A/C frame.

I had my A/C shroud off last week to clean the condenser coils....., getting my 11 year old A/C shroud seated back under the "front" metal clips was a little challenging.

FYI: Condenser Coil Cleaner......, 14 oz. Condenser Coil Cleaner-WCOIL - The Home Depot

It was a calculated risk when I ordered the 15k on my new rig. I knew I was running the chance that it wouldn't work, but figured I'd deal with it since I already had the generator and more cooling sounded like a good idea. The hard start capacitor was my last effort before thinking a larger generator. I'm glad it worked!!

Back when I was investigating the generator purchase, I often read that people felt that 15k A/C's used less power running than most 13.5k's. So that gave me hope. My generator sure doesn't sound like the AC uses more power than my 13.5 did.

So often the advice to generator purchasers from the forums is to get 4000 watts or more. While that may be the sure thing, it requires 2 generators paired, or a really heavy single generator. There are so many differences between AC units and generators and their ability to take on startup spikes. For some of us, just enough is good enough.

What brand AC unit do you have?A recent lightning strike taking out tvs and coffee makers made me nervous that the trailer could be at risk due to it being plugged in to a 120v extension cord to keep batteries charged up,i borrowed my brothers 10k watt generator and the AC wouldnt start on 50amp plug selected to 120v,i had to swap switch to 240v/120v,im guessing amperage wasn't enough on the 120v side.I have a Honda 2000 watt generator that would be nice to run AC on when I'm working on it,that little generator got us thru a week with no power during hurricane Sandy running lights and 2 fridges as long as they didn't start at the same time

I believe Jayco calls it the Whisper Quiet Air Conditioning.

The sticker under the shroud says it is a "RV Products, Div of AirXCEL Inc." Model 48254C869 (which when searching would make it a model 48000)

Which seems to indicate it is a Mach 15

I seem to recall that someone mentioned that they were able to start their 15,000 AC with a 2000 watt generator but if I recall it had something to do with the altitude they were at, at the time. By the way this was some time ago. Would this mod work with a 2000 watt genny?

It might work on a 2,000 watt, but I sure wouldn't want to run out and buy one, expecting that it would. I am pretty certain that the only way to have a chance at it would be to install the capacitor. There are enough 2,000 watt generators around that you should be able to borrow our rent one to try after installing the capacitor. This would let you know for sure before your purchase.

One thing I will point out: I would expect that a 2,000 would be running nearly full out to power the air. This would likely put it at a higher noise level than a bigger generator. But I understand the trade offs of weight vs noise vs multiple units. That one would be your decision for your needs.

I already have the 2000 watt genny. I was just wondering if it would work but if noise is in the mix then I guess I would not attempt the mod.

I guess that I should have looked at your signature first.

Personally, if I were in your shoes, I'd try it. It's rather inexpensive. I want wasn't trying to dissuade you from trying by bringing up noise, but just pointing out a consideration for purchase. (Which doesn't apply here)

We only use ours for running air when traveling during overnight stops if it is miserable out. In the last 5 years, that's been 2 nights and a couple hours during one day. Like when it's 94 degrees at 1 am and we are in a Wal-Mart or Cracker Barrel parking lot. Yeah, it's noise, but not any worse than the freeway we are usually next to.

If your inclined, I'd try it just so you have the option in the future. Or if nothing else, you can be the Guinea Pig that finds out if it will work!

I tried this the other night, but it didn't work with mine. I have a 2016 Jayflight with a 13.5K Airxcel 48253C966 (Coleman Mach III) and a Champion 2000W inverter generator. I installed the supco SPP6 cap. I have read, though, that this A/C unit is harder to start than usual.
