4-pin Hookup

So the Pop-up I have was modified by the previous owner to utilize a 4 pin wiring harness.

This suits me fine, since my TV only has a 4 pin receptacle.

Of course, I think he dinked it up. I need someone with a little more experience to check my logic.

Here's the existing wiring harness (with all the protection stripped away)

You can see he went Color to Color. (I bet it seemed like a good idea)

Of course, when I did my safety check, The left turn signal was weird. If the headlights were on, the break light was on, and I did not have a turn signal. If i did not have the headlights on, the turn signal operated, but seemed dim. Other lights appeared to operate normally. I assumed (I think correctly) that the wiring harness had been "modified".

Here's the manual from my camper:

So check me on this:

The correct wiring should be:
Camper TV
White - White
Green - Green
Brown - Brown
Red - Yellow

I'd LOVE to try tying the Black to the Green (So I get power to the Camper when the headlights are on) but I cannot guarantee the gauge of the wire in the TV, but it looks smaller than the 14 gauge in the manual. So I think I'll pass on that particular fire waiting to happen. If I really want it, I'll replace the 4 pin with a 6 Pin on the TV.

Thoughts?

I would start by making sure you have a good ground between the TV and trailer. It may ground thru the trailer ball so hook it up and bounce on the hitch a couple of times then check the lights.

You may be wise to confirm at each brake light, turn signal, & marker light the color of the wire. A trailer could be wired up with all black wires or any other color for that matter as long as the pinout on the plug is correct.

I'd check ground first as well.

My advice is to do it right the first time and convert everything to 7 pin...

Then build an adapter each time you need to haul some oddball trailer with something different.

The previous owner didn't use the red wire at all and that would be your left turn signal and brake light for that side.

For your 4 prong plug all you need is
White for ground
Red for left turn
Brown for right turn
Green for running lights.

If those 4 are hooked up you will also have stop lights.

Tape the others off as you will have no need for them.

Mostly everyone was right in this thread. Previous owner jacked up the removable wiring harness, as shown in the first post. He also removed the left taillight, and rewired the light to use the yellow wire instead of red. But he made all the connections backwards. He also used some pretty crappy compression splices. I also found He did this cause the red wire has a break in it. I continued to use the yellow, but soldered the splices.

My POPUP trailer has electric brakes installed and I have to use the 7-way connector to get power back to the electric brakes as required by DOT.

You won't be able to accommodate the electric brakes for your POPUP trailer using a 4-way connector if you them installed. It is also a safety violation.

True, but I don't have electric breaks. <sarcasm> I'm blessed with hydraulic surge breaks<\sarcasm>

It looks like the same person did your wiring that did my inlaws popup. They had no turn signals and the running lights came on with the left turn signal, and only one brake light worked. The wiring was a hack job at best. I got everything working, but it will have to be totally replaced eventually for it to be 100%.

Sounds like a "custom" wiring job that worked for the previous owner but not when wired correctly. If your TV wiring works with other trailers then rewire your camper without touching your TV. If you do not have brakes there is no need for a seven pin harness just use a 4 pin. Trace your wires out and you will be good. By the way crimp connecters if done properly will work great.

I usually smear some silicone over the crimp connectors for added insurance. Should work fine for your set up.
