A/C Output

We recently purchased a 2011 Jayco Octane ZX T26Y with 15,000 btu A/C unit. We just drove from NH to AZ and the A/C would not even cooldown the camper until it got dark out. Average temp was around 90-95 coming across country. I checked the temp of the air coming out of the A/C and it was right around 50 degrees. What should the output air temp be???

The 50 degrees is the normal, expected temperature coming out of the A/C unit. I would look for other causes like airflow distribution. The A/C needs to draw in the air within the camper, then blow the cold stuff back. I would check your ventilation ducting for this circulation. Also, check the filter on the draw side to see it's clean and free flowing.

Remember that these things are not well insulated.. so when sitting in the hot sun the A/C just cannot keep up..

Unless you have an RV that has the heavy insulation, one A/C has a hard time cooling down the RV in very hot weather. That's why you see several RVs with two A/C on them. Our has the polar insulation pack and our A/C has a hard time cooling off the RV. If you have a large RV, that is a problem also. We cover outside of large windows to help cut down on sun heating up RV.

Let me ask you this - when you say it would not cool, were you trying to cool from first thing in the morning until night or did you start cooling in the middle of the day? I find like you it takes a long time if I am starting from a hot trailer - you have to cool down all the wood, supplies, cokes, walls, etc, etc so that is a tremendous amount of heat to pull out. If I keep mine cranked down starting first thing in the morning I can usually keep in the low 70s even if it is 95 outside.

Also - do you have quick cool vents? If so, make sure they are all open during the day. Closing them seems to reduce the cooling ability.

I have a 2010 322FKS Eagle and cooling in 95degree weather is tough, especially with sun on the slide side of the trailer. I have cut up a foil car/truck window sun visor and this really helps the heat gain, I have also tinted the windows. I am considering having roll up awnings installed on the 3 large windows on the slide out side.

I am in the residential a/c business and sun heat gain is a big issue in this very hot summer. Also the a/c works harder when the humidity is high. Give the unit a head start and cool down early.

AZ residents can all tell you that trying to cool anything here in the day is nigh on impossible if it has soaked up the heat. The split ( difference between air in and out temps) is all the repair guys look at. I have realy good home unit and the split tonight is 75 in 56 out or ~ 19 Deg. If your split is any wher near that your doing GREAT.

The MASS you have to bring down and the energy transfer capability of the air ( humidity ) really drives how log that takes. We had a power failure here in mid summer due to a storm and the house soaked in at 105 for over 5 days. Took nearly 3 days for the floors to be back to normal ( on a slab).

Just remember its a dry heat ... Did not have AC in a car for the first 10 years I lived here... Wow that was stupid...
