That's the way I would do it. Autoformers have their own surge/spike protection but, at best it is minimal. Replacing or repairing an autoformer is far more expensive than replacing a surge/spike arrestor so I makes good sense to put a sacrificial arrestor ahead of the autoformer.

The autoformer needs to be ahead of the EMS. Otherwise, the EMS would shut off the power before the autoformer would get a chance to boost low voltage. Since voltage can still goo too high or dip too low, even with an autoformer in the circuit, the EMS still needed for backup for over or under voltage protection.

I'm good with Jeff's, Lady Fitzgerald's and Jopopsy's input in this matter and will not rule out opting for the Hugh's unit as part of my electrical protection regiment.

Ah well, what's another $100 bucks in this incredibly expensive hobby right? The rig is certainly more than $100 bucks.

Post --> PI Surge --> 25' Cord --> Autoformer chained to my rear axle under coach --> ~12' Cord --> PI EMS (in electrical bay) --> Coach.

Autoformer, EMS, Proper Order, Weather Protection

That setup will serve you well...
Attached is a pic of part of my setup. This is along the back wall of my storage area.

Boy do I feel educated now. My Progressive unit just shuts down when out of parameter power exists, and did have this happen once when wanting air conditioning in California, at my in laws house. I used my generator.
The EMS saw low voltage from his garage and shutdown. Now I know what would prevent that, but like I said, only that one time and I solved the problem by pouring fuel to my Honda.
Seems to not be a boring thread anymore, plenty of interest.

Thanks for asking, i have both the auto transformer, and a ems unit.
The reason i went with the autoformer was because of low voltage in the parks. I also had to disconnect from the park power and fire up the generator for a/c cooling power.
So it seems the order is:
1. park power
2. ems
3. autoformer
4. power cord into the camper.

The way you want to connect them, the autoformer will never get a chance to boost low voltage because the EMS will shut the power off before it ever gets to the autoformer. You have to have the autoformer before the EMS. Since autoformers have only limited surge and spike protection, it is also a good idea to put additional surge and spike arrestor (NOT an EMS) before the autoformer since it is far less expensive to replace a blown arrestor than a blown autoformer.

An older thread but wanted to acknowledge those that contributed by bumping it.

I received the third "piece to the puzzle" today when my Hughes Autoformer arrived. I already had a PI surge protector that was an emergency backup to my portable EMS as well as a 25' extension cord so the autoformer was the only missing piece.

Sadly, I don't think I have sufficient room in our TT to install both a hard wired EMS and the autoformer inside, but will be investigating that shortly and will at least get a hardwired EMS installed to limit what is underneath and make things a little less noticeable.

So thanks to everyone for their comments, ideas and suggestions in this thread. Made my implementation a lot easier and my life a lot less stressful because I have a game plan that should work out just fine for now, but more importantly, no longer have to worry about the EMS cutting power to the RV due to low voltages during the times the DW is watching or recording her soaps!
