Battery Location

I just purchased a 2008 Jayco Jay Feather Sport and it is my first travel trailer! I went to install a battery disconnect switch and noticed the battery is located under the bed in the open storage. Is this safe? I have seen battery blow up before so this worries me a bit. The battery is not even secured down, so at the very least I would like to secure it down, what would you recommend?

Sounds like the previous owner moved it.

I would not want a lead acid battery in an enclosed compartment especially one that is not tied down as secured.

Welcome to the forum.

What Grumpy said. Do you see a problem with moving it back to the trailer tongue? That's probably the best place.

If it's an AGM lead acid battery you can have it inside since those do no vent any explosive gases, but it should still be tied down. If it's a regular lead acid, then it needs to be vented to the outside!

CONGRATULATIONS on the JAYCO!!!

...and WELCOME TO JOF!!! The members here are GREAT!!! There is a lot of GREAT information to be found here. I am sure that you will have information and pictures to share with us... so please do!!

Yes and no to AGM emitting gasses. AGM batteries do have vents. Normally, they do not emit the gasses under NORMAL operating conditions. If you discharge the AGM battery to low, the battery can emit gasses through the vent as the battery can heat up under the prolonged charge. How much gas, no clue.
