Where or how do you mount your cable box, given the limited space behind the TV and in the compartment where the cable hookups are located, and also keep the remote "line of sight" access?
Unless your DirecTV "box" is REALLY old, you should be able to configure the receiver to use RF (radio frequency) instead of IR (infrared) for the remote commands. Then you can mount it in a cabinet near by, behind the TV etc. and eliminate the need for "line of sight".
If you don't have an RF capable remote (model # has an R or RX at the end) you can order one from numerous places online. The RC66RX I believe is the most compatible with all "non genie" receivers and televisions.
