Exterior running lights?

I made my maiden voyage this past week with my 287Bhsw SLX. We noticed other TTs with their exterior running lights on at night while not hooked up to their Tow vehicle. How did they do this? Is there a switch I don't know about? Is my camper able to do that?

Special electrical modification.


Jumper pins 3 & 4 together on the 7-pin connector. Works every time.


I hope you were you at a campground with shore power or they were running generators.


As a boondocker, I feel that's a whole lot of battery power that could be better used elsewhere.

To add to what Mike says I have seen where some campers have installed another receptacle near their hitch and plug their trailer end into that receptacle when parked. It actually then had wiring leading inside so they could turn the lights on and off as desired. It also protected their plug from water/damage while disconnected from the tow vehicle while feeding the running lights.

Each to their own, I just hope they shut them off eventually in case a nearby camper is bothered by the light.

When I rewired my diesel compressor, I included the parking lights in the instrument lights circuit. It is really cool to see a trailer, not hitched to anything with it's running lights on. You know it is irrational, but it is real, nonetheless.

Which is really easy to do using a standard blade fuse.

Oh! Never considered that. I used two strands from a piece of #16 stranded wire when the relay in the TV crapped out. Damn Jaguars and Lucas electrics.

If you take an automotive turn signal flasher relay (buy at any automotive store) and twist the blades it plugs right into the cable that plugs into the TV and all the running lights flash.. May want to do it if someone is coming over and never saw your trailer, or just a Halloween thing..

Or as a prank to another camper you know, do it and then ask them how they got them on and flashing.

another option is buy a spare heavy duty flasher unit, and plug into pins 3 and 4 instead of the fuse, now you have flashing lights all around, use a light duty flasher and the flash faster.

I actually have used the flasher option along a major freeway interchange (I35E & I94)in a really bad location, as my brother shredded a PU tire, and did not have the proper tools. I pulled in behind and lite up all the lights to blink, I swear that every vehicle in downtown St. Paul moved over one lane. It was really nice.

I have one but never use it except in case of emergency.

If you have to call 911, it is nice to have blinking lights when they come into the cg. looking for a white trailer!

Standard Blade Fuse on jumper pins 3 & 4 together on the 7-pin trailer wire harness connector. Easy peasy!
